I have been working at East Midlands Trains full-time for more than 6 years

    Pros

    Pay and travel perks good

    Cons

Having read the other poor reviews it matches up with my thoughts. How did things get so bad? Lack of experienced managers. No leadership. Poor morale. You get the impression that some managers like to hear their own voice and try to conceal their ineptitude. As for the HR and recruitment department, why does that continue in its present form? Its a bit like a bread and butter pudding - looks good on the outside but...

I worked at East Midlands Trains full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

Excellent occupational health support/advice, reasonably good travel concessions (although slightly below average for the industry), reasonable (but again, below typical industry salaries), generally good opportunities to progress or expand into different functions/roles.

    Cons

Particularly inconsistent management styles, inexperienced leadership evident day to day. Real lack of investment into front line (or any) facilities. Refurbishment does take place, but is extremely basic and generally poor quality. Staff v Management divide, evident day to day. Severe work-life balance issues. Workload exceeds working hours, and requires a serious amount of "taking work home" each day to...

    Advice to Management

Managers need to be retained in post for longer to allow them to make a real difference, either via salary enhancement/review, improved senior management support (not micromanagement) and the ability to bring about real differences to your front line staff.

I have been working at East Midlands Trains full-time for more than 6 years

    Pros

Excellent travel facilities, working terms and conditions are good, train environments are clean and tidy and are a pleasure to work on. Many old school employees are some of the best in the business, knowledgeable and professional.

    Cons

Directors are far too involved with every single issue that arises. Management recruited have no experience whatsoever, and frequently leave within a matter of weeks, they are pretty much used as “yes men”/puppets to do whatever the Directors are requesting. Don’t expect any support at all, and be ready for constant threats of dismissal if trains are at risk of being cancelled for whatever reason. The resource centre...

    Advice to Management

Directors need to recruit competent managers. Managers then need to recruit people that are fit for the job, not people who can play jenga on an assessment day. Empty threats doesn’t get productivity up, it gets backs up.

    Cons

Poor strategic decision makers; Directors overly involved in day to day matters. Zero duty of care towards managers.

I have been working at East Midlands Trains full-time for more than 20 years

    Pros

Travel & Pension are way above anything else you'd get in non unionised environment.

    Cons

Nasty approach to colleagues mental health. Keen promotion of "hot women". They call it equality, I call it sexism of the oldest kind.

    Advice to Management

As someone who has suffered occupational stress & depression for the last 2 years, it's a bit naughty sending me a retail briefing on a new ticket product to my home address during my annual Leave week. Which insensitive and downright stupid soul in Human Resourses thought of that genius move?
