I have been working at Eastern Michigan University part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Learned a lot, no pressure, culturally diversified academic environment.

    Cons

The Business Analytics field needs more support on all aspects: technical courses, research funding and up-to-date tools like Hadoop and Tableau.

I have been working at Eastern Michigan University part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I truly love what I do. Students are wonderful. My colleagues are supportive. The union gives a 100+% to fight for our needs.

    Cons

*Upper administration and Board of Regents appear to not care about students, faculty and staff. They have been hell-bent on cutting and outsourcing.
*Lack of respect for lecturers. We are often informed of our course load 2 weeks prior to the beginning of a term. Sometimes even less. This causes ALL kinds of problems. It makes it difficult to prep for classes and order books. It often means payroll mistakes because paperwork isn't properly prepared (due to the continual reduction in clerical staffing).
*University increasingly being run like a corporation seeing itself above the community at large.
*Lack of professional development for part-time adjuncts and no pathway to move into even a full-time lecturer position. Forget about tenure-track.

    Advice to Management

Right size administration. Find your cajones and pull out of the MAC, cause our students shouldn't be subsidizing a failing football team to appear on ESPN on Thursday evening. Wake up! Its not pulling new students to the university. Upper admin, consider a pay cut! Some of you are making more than enough to live in Southeastern Michigan. You can take a pay cut far quicker than your adjuncts and lower administrative staff.
