I worked at Eastern University (Less than a year)

    Pros

The students make the job worth it, and most of the employees are super friendly and always willing to lend a hand.

    Cons

Administration is disorganized, there's very low morale among the staff, nobody really feels secure in their job due to budget cuts.

    Advice to Management

Please pay people what they actually deserve, and listen to the student body, they'll tell you what they want if you actually listen.

I worked at Eastern University full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The students, staff. Beautiful campus while it lasts.

    Cons

Administration lies, denies, obfuscates, misleads etc. Anything but an honest answer.
For the most part the faculty are sheep, scared to do anything about the abuses and declining quality and integrity of the school. Territory trumps common interest. Every man/woman for himself/herself.
If the Christian element of Eastern is important to you good luck unless you're OK with a much touted "big tent" which treats everything from orthodox to "this week's latest" theology as equally valid. Well, orthodox is patiently tolerated sometimes if you keep it to yourself.
Morale and trust are rock bottom.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you're doing and maybe you can cash in on the sale of the campus to developers in the near future. You have found the perfect combination of deceit and incompetence to assure the closing of the school.
Above all, keep treating the faculty as idiots and pretending to the students that there are "many kinds of Christians, including those who don't believe in Christ or the bible". Uh huh. Your "big tent" is full of rot.

I worked at Eastern University full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Fantastic students - colleagues are doing their best considering.

    Cons

Administration is top-heavy, clueless and willful. There is not one person qualified to lead who is employed in a leadership position at Eastern. The faculty is demoralized as this administration could care less about them. Everyone is underpaid and under-ranked.

    Advice to Management

Please seek employment elsewhere before you completely implode what was a very nice place to work, prior to your arrivals.

I worked at Eastern University (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The people at Eastern University are part of the reason to work there. Some fabulous people are employed by that school. In addition, full-time employees get 100% tuition remission for themselves and immediate family members, so you or a spouse or child could earn a degree while you are an employee

    Cons

The school is working hard to reinvent themselves in an over-saturated market and recently laid off over 40 staff members and eliminated some faculty positions, in addition to limiting some previously-offered degree programs. The school is changing a lot as it tries to find a new niche in the market, which means they are tight on money and are asking a lot of the employees they have left.

    Advice to Management

Don't forget people are the backbone of your organization. When you start treating them as expendable, without value, and as a commodity, you will lose what has made your organization great.

I have been working at Eastern University full-time

    Pros

Decent benefits for employees in Philadelphia.
Coworkers are caring and really dedicated.
    Students make it worthwhile.
Time off in between Christmas and New Year's Day is fantastic.

    Cons

Everything is mismanaged. Management isn't secure and tends to micromanage. Employee morale is awful. Everyone is underpaid, but told to be appreciative. No one can fully do his or her job.

    Advice to Management

Transparency is an important component to gaining the respect of your employees.
Understand that if you pay peanuts you can't expect works to work all hours of the night and on the weekends, too.

    Pros

Generous benefits and vacation time along with many paid days off.

    Cons

Low salaries and wages, not enough investment in the resources needed to get the job done well.

    Advice to Management

Invest more in capital and human resources to serve the students well. Eliminate junk majors for majors leading to better paying careers.

    Pros

    Snow days are helpful/bonus.
Administration does tend to work around family issues, which can be wonderful and much appreciated.

    Cons

Low morale throughout the whole campus.
Administration does not care about its staff or recognize its contributions.
No annual raise for 3 years in a row.
No communication between departments....and at times, there is no cooperation between the departments.

    Advice to Management

The administration needs to make sure the staff gets a decent and fair raise every year.
Stop going abroad to recruit students....it would be more cost-effective and make more sense in these difficult times to recruit from somewhere closer ....like maybe the Bible Belt!....then you could put all of that money that you saved towards annual raises for staff members.

    Pros

Slow paced and no one really cares how much you actually produce. A real easy job for those that have no incentive or desire to work. Come here. You'll fit right in.

    Cons

Management - aka Board of Trustees are old and severely out of touch with reality. These folks know not a thing about running a business. Can't raise funds by begging and don't have a clue of how to raise working capital through the capital markets. The boots on the ground.... Vice-Presidents are also out of touch and really just fulfill their immediate roles without having any knowledge whatsoever about managing the Univesity on a daily basis.

    Advice to Management

Wake up! You travel around the world to fight oppression yet oppression lives within your own confines and you do nothing about it. No raises for 4 years and then a small cost of living adjustment - (mine was under .25 cents an hour) and then no raises again is OUT OF TOUCH.
