I worked at Eastern Washington University part-time

    Pros

Often time the team members themselves were wonderful to work with.

    Cons

Upper management and administration constantly made other peoples jobs more difficult than they needed to be.

    Advice to Management

Talk to the different departments, learn the jobs before making changes you don't know anything about.

    Cons

Have to deal with student conflict from time to time, if you don't teach than it's fairly random what you do, ... not much else.

    Advice to Management

I enjoy the freedom and respect I have gotten.

I worked at Eastern Washington University full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I loved teaching there, but I think that one's experience is largely due to what department one is in. Our department had a commitment to high standards not necessarily shared by the administrative office. I loved the students, as they became very open to professors that had a lot to offer.

    Cons

Depending on the department, one could spend a lot of times in intra-department squabbles.

I have been working at Eastern Washington University full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Very reasonable working hours.
Vacation + Sick time + 10 state holidays.
Take 10 credits per quarter for $5.
    Free public transportation.
Hands on interaction with many different applications, technologies, and tools.
Work face-to-face with faculty, students, and administrative staff.
    Collective Bargaining with WFSE.
State benefits with pension and 403B retirement options
    Work with intelligent, well–intentioned people.

    Cons

    State compensation levels.
Goals, plans, and successes need to be more transparent.
Union resists many modernization moves causing:
     1) Long waits for changes
     2) A communication rift between management and staff on many strategic initiatives
EWU has many important players with differing goals, it can become political.

    Advice to Management

Continue open strategic planning and work to fill open positions.

    Pros

Relaxed environment around a great campus. Gave all the resources needed to get the job done.

    Cons

As with any state school, turn around times can really drag out. Speedy responses can be a problem when getting things done.

    Negative Outlook

    Pros

    Reasonable working hours
    Good public transport
    A few enjoyable coworkers
    Tuition discount
(Pro/Con) Overtime is relatively rare (read: no budget)

    Cons

Extremely poor morale due to secretive and hostile management
High work load with consistently around 10% of OIT positions unfilled
    Employees with net negative productivity
    Wages below market rate
Management has no cohesive plan, but is quick to shoot down new ideas

    Advice to Management

Salary savings are not sustainable; fill your positions before you build more cathedral like C-suite offices. Start sharing information with your employees; no one has any idea where they'll be in a month, let alone your vision for the future. The mere fact that you actually hired someone should not be kept a secret only to be shared with a special few. There is effectively zero employee morale and until you improve that you will continue to drain valuable employees and the union will ensure you only have warm seats left.
