I have been working at Easterseals full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Good bit of autonomy
    All good experiences with co-workers
Somewhat flexible hours. Consumers across the board pretty good. Casual relaxed atmosphere.

    Cons

Constantly change staff's schedules & work locations & unfair distribution of work loads.
Site Managers all run things differently. Rules for one staff is def not the rule for all. Site Managers hardest part of the job to deal with. Low pay.

    Advice to Management

Get on the same page. Offer the same opportunities as each other. Pass along the same info. STOP playing favorites. Ask staff their opinions.

I worked at Easterseals full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Working for Easter Seals makes you just feel good inside. No matter what your job is you are doing something everyday that makes a difference in the lives of others.

    Cons

Working for a non for profit company has it's drawbacks. Make sure your salary is one you are happy with when you start because it's not likely to change. Ever.

    Advice to Management

Provide employees with recommendations or references after they leave.

    Pros

The staff is amazingly helpful and friendly. I am always learning more. ESSC is extremely ethical in all that they do. Guidelines must be followed, for our safety. It's a great place to grow and learn!!

    Cons

Very difficult to get full time hours!

I worked at Easterseals full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Exposed to various disabilities in the job and had the opportunity to empower others
Some of the clients I had taught me invaluable life lessons, and I will forever hold those individuals dear

    Cons

The pay was so low that I could hardly afford gas and food. A colleague who was hired after me (and had no college degree or relevant experience) was offered almost $10,000 more - and not because she negotiated.
There was a kind of "fraternity/sorority" feel to the Indianapolis location while I worked there. My team manager would pitch girls against each other through gossip and back-stabbing. I was also expected to use my own vehicle to take clients to interviews all over town with no mileage reimbursement, and much damage to my vehicle even within a few months' time. We never signed any kind of liability form, so I would not have been protected if there had been an accident or lawsuit at any point.
Unfortunately, if you were low on the totem pole you were treated as dispensable, which resulted in high turnover. My experience here turned me away from pursuing work in the non-profit sector. I will gladly volunteer, but the bald corruptness in treatment, salaries, and unreasonable time expectations were unable to balance out the wonderful time I had with those whom I served.

    Advice to Management

I hope that time has provided the opportunity for management to change their approach to lower-level employees. I hope that there is more equity in the salaries and VPs/Presidents are not being overpaid while employees are suffering to meet basic needs. Finally, staff should be reimbursed for expenses such as mileage and legal documentation should be provided for anything that would require liability coverage.

    Pros

Lack opportunities for advancement , not good for minority.

    Cons

No respect for staffs. Manager acts like God.

    Advice to Management

Be fair to minority staffs and give them equal opportunities. Easter Seal Midwest will give promotions to incompetent white males and leave black women , under them.

I worked at Easterseals full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The kids you work with are tough but sweet and you feel lucky to be there for them. You learn a lot and it's a great way to start your career in SPED or social services. There are some truly dedicated people who work there for the love of the job.

    Cons

The pay is horrible and the benefits are worse. There are some staff members that work there that take advantage of the clients, are abusive and are not qualified. Also the CEO makes over 500,000 a year but we would have budget cuts that ment residential clients would go without real life skills programs and even winter clothing. There was a saying I found extremely true "it's all about who you know or who you blow"

    Advice to Management

Train and pay your employees better. Create real therapeutic programs that will help the clients and not just warehouse them.
