      Fantastic place to work

      Pros

      - Wonderful people that make for a great work envirmonment - Nearly everyone you encounter is very compentant and easy to get along with, which makes it easy to get work done. - A large portion of the workers have family that have worked there and plan to spend their entire career with the company. Having alot of 25+ year people around has made it a great place to learn. - At a point in time where people are beginning to retire, so there are a good number of opportunities for advancement - Competative salaries and benefits - All the different functions are located in or close to the plant so there's excellent communication between business, manufacturing, etc. This also means the scope of jobs available is wide and workers are able focus on their stregths and use resources for areas they're not as proficient.

      Cons

      - Since it's a small town if you're single when you come to the area finding someone here may be difficult. - It's the major technical company in the area, so if a spouse is looking for a job and can't get hired on at Eastman there aren't a lot of other good options nearby.

      Integrity says it all

      Pros

Eastman Chemical has long been a Triple Bottom Line company and has a track record to show it. People, Planet and Profit -- Eastman focuses on all three with great success. I personally work in the environmental (Planet) part of the company and I am proud of our stewardship. We have a great compliance record, largely because our Management insists on doing what is right and not trying to just get by. Regarding the People component, the company's emphasis on safety and wellness is exemplary. Finally, you only have to look at our rising stock price to know that we don't have to sacrifice Profit in order to achieve success in the areas of People and Planet.

      Cons

Eastman Chemical's headquarters and largest manufacturing site are located in a relatively small town in the Appalachians. As a result, our workforce is not very diverse. This hinders us in our efforts to become a more global company

This company has a huge disconnect between middle management and direct supervisors.

      Pros

Flexible work schedule allows employees to work four 9 hour days and have a half day off every Friday. Direct technical supervision is really good to work for.

      Cons

Although the direct supervision is competent, their hands are typically tied by the other 6 levels of management above them. The pyramid of management at Eastman is ridiculous and the amount of overhead that they require to run a company is overkill. These various layers of management are completely disconnected from the rest of the plant, yet make many of the decisions that directly affect day-to-day activity. These people seem to be put into their positions, not because they are qualified, but because of who they are related to through marriage or who they went to high school with. Eastman, being in a small town, is overrun by nepotism. Do not expect any reward for your personal accomplishments. Eastman rewards based on the fact that "Your hard work will not go unnoticed. It will pay off in the long run." but the long run is on a 15-20 year scale for this company. This, in addition to drastic cuts to the benefits package that retroactively affected current employees, is why the turnover is high for employees in the past 2-3 years.

great place to learn about marketing

      Pros

good pay and benefits a lot of attn from management (good attention and not micromanaging - lots of teambuilding) nice environment - people definitely make this a lifetime career and community - everyone says hello in the elevator or hallway - very friendly and welcoming a lot of resources to get your job done good communication across depts - minimal silo problems great marketing team and a very progressive marketing dept particularly for a b2b

      Cons

overheard some rumbling from others about "old school" in terms of pay and promotion - but i saw a wide range of people in management so this may just be bitterness from a few individuals the company is huge so obviously people will be passed over some i disliked being in a cubicle and wanted more teamwork kingsport is a small town - not a lot to do

Eastman is a great place to work

      Pros

Eastman is an great company to work for. These are the reasons why: 1) Ethics: Starting at the top, the company is full of people that are honest and believe in living an ethical and moral lifestyle 2) Northeast TN: Eastman's headquarters is in Northeast TN,one of the most beautiful places in the world. I know this because I have traveled around the world. 3) People: Worldclass people that are professional, smart and great to work with. The people are truly a step above and go the extra mile. 4) Respect: I feel respected and trusted to do my job. Trustworthy people have a tendency to be trusting. My supervisor trusts my word and my judgment.

      Cons

Northeast TN is a small town atmosphere. It is difficult for young people and single people. Southern people can be closed minded.

      A Top Notch Company

      Pros

The culture is phenomenal. Everyone wants to contribute, learn, and grow at their maximum capacities. The leadership in this company is great, and is able to get the most out of it's people. This is the best company in the region to work for because of the commitment to its employees and the communities that it serves. There is a clear vision that everyone can follow here, and everyone is on board.

      Cons

The con can also be a pro for some. This is a small town when it comes to life outside of work. If you enjoy the mountains and outdoor activites, this region is the place for you. If you enjoy urban life and the culture that bigger cities have to offer, you may be disappointed. I will say Kingsport is on the move, and it is looking for opportunities to accomodate this problem.

Commitment to location (Kingsport, TN) is a major consideration for career opportunities

May 23, 2018 - Corporate Strategy Manager in Kingsport, TN

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Company is going through major business model change to catch up with the rest of the industry. 30% of employees approaching retirement age in the next few years. Therefore, lots of opportunities within the company. However, local connection or commitment to the location (Kingsport, TN) has become a major consideration for any career opportunities. Performance is secondary or even third tier consideration for career progress.

      Cons

Company HQ located in a very remote area, Kingsport, TN. Most of the people in the company still have a small town mind-set. Company policy rewards loyalty instead of performance. For example, if 2 people doing exactly the same job, one could have an office and makes much more than the other just because the prior has been with the company for longer time. This is such a disappointment for a global company. Another thing has bothered me personally is Eastman likes to get in employee's personal life. For example, almost anyone who joined the company and moved from outside of Kingsport, TN will be asked when they are going to buy a house in town. This question will be asked many times for years until they actually bought a house. I have seen people at all levels, even Director level, to be excluded from promotion because of not having a house in town. Many people have left the company because of lack of career development opportunities.
