    Pros

Ecolab is a good, solid company. It's not "Sexy" - not like a dotcom or ultra-high-tech or anything - but they handle the blocking and tackling of their industry really, really well. They are focused on solid, sustainable (economically AND environmentally) growth. They don't go looking for huge splashes, they just focus leading their industry and serving their customers well. And it's amazing how powerful they are in their market segment; they dominate bigger, better-known companies in terms of market share. The benefits are amazing, the salaries decent. The culture is a little "relationship-based", but not to a stupid extent (like United Healthcare). In a city full of badly-run corporations, Ecolab is (so far) a joy to behold.

    Cons

Again, the corporate culture is very relationship based. People tend to stay at Ecolab a looong time, and getting things does IS often a matter of "who you know" within the company. This isn't all bad - it's not like everything about the company's future is decided by a bunch of morons on a golf course (see: United HealthCare)

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work. And don't be afraid of innovation coming up from below.

    Pros

Compensation is great, Having a Flex Schedule, 401k is awesome, Solid Company, Low turn overs, No lay offs, Always a demand for this market.

    Cons

Long hours, Mgmt is good ole boys club, Recognition not always there and others who are less capable will be promoted not all based on performance. Old fashioned mgmt style with hot shots holding it together. While family life balance was great when I first started the wetting has definitly change to an all numbers game.

    Advice to Management

Promote people for loyalty and performance . Get rid of poor performers and stupid upper mgmt that only look at numbers and not how it will affect the growth or future of the company. Nickel and diming the very foundation of what built Ecolab is going to hurt our market share and future revenues. Let's focus on being move competitive with the local markets instead of generalizing a mass one price concept. Bring back the Specality products that made us great is Ultra limeaway, Guardian Plus, and the Foaming Pathway cleaner.

    Pros

This is a company that cares about its employees--they know that if you are comfortable and happy with the company, you will do better work. Management asks for your input and is quick to ask you what you need. You can believe that they really want to see you succeed at the company and will bend over backwards to help you reach your goals and progress professionally.

The benefits are also great, particularly when you consider how many companies put stipulations on new employees having to be there a year before tapping into those benefits. They offer great health benefits and generous pension plans. Its somewhere you can envision staying with for your entire career.

Enough cannot be said about the fact that once you're with the company, they want to see you stay there. The company isn't a revolving door where they're looking for someone better. They do want to make sure things aren't stagnant so they will help you move along your career path at the company.

    Cons

There's a lot of work to be done, sometimes almost too much for one person. The company is cautious to not hire too mny employees which is great because they then don't find themselves issuing layoffs in a recession, but it's also difficult to keep up with the amount t of work to be done when there sometimes just aren't enough people to step up to the plate. In some arenas of the company, you will work on Ecolab holidays (day after Christmas, day after Thanksgiving), though you will still get holiday pay and overtime.

Another honest downside is that while we make and sell necessary products, they're not cheap. So in a recession, a lot of our customers feel the pinch--especially the restaurateurs.

In some sectors of the company, I'll admit it can feel hard to fit it. So if you're a super social person, you'll probably be outgoing enough to avoid any loneliness in the office. But if you're shy you may struggle more to find your niche.

    Advice to Management

Please remember to communicate to the people you're manage, and stay in constant tune to how the "average joe' feels at the company. Remember to periodically find out what it's like to be there at the ground level.

    Pros

Ecolab is a stable, growing, global company and leader worldwide in the industry -- our products are need and our market relatively stable. The culture is like a family and people who work here really care about the company. The CEO came in as a marketing professional and advanced to CEO -- he is friendly, thoughtful and approachable. He values the employees and their input. Its just a great place to feel like a person rather than a cog in a wheel.

    Cons

There isn't really a central place where people come and go, so its not easy to network and meet people that you don't know. You have to hone your networking skills and make an effort to make that happen.

    Advice to Management

Keep an eye on workforce planning and continue to make opportunities a built in part of the retention plan.

    Pros

If you want to be the best and work with the best this is a great job for you. It is at times tough. But in most cases if you need tons of hours to complete monthly, weekly, daily requirements, you are not working with the tools that ECOLAB supplies for you. Make your own schedule aside from customer needs. Great atmosphere within work groups at meetings and functions. ECOLAB promotes exclusively from within. Have never met a manager that was not at the lowest rungs at one point in their careers. Company cars are provided. Amazing benefits and vacation time.

    Cons

This can take up a lot of time and is demanding when you fall behind or have large customer issues talking several days. It is hard to gain support from top management on issues that pertain to smaller/local customers.

    Advice to Management

Keep ECOLAB the great company and ease up on the amount of daily task that keeps us away from our customers and families.

If you get in through the Finance Rotational Program, you get to move around the organization three times and learn a lot about how Ecolab conducts its' business. Managers are very supportive in growth and development of their employees. There are a lot of lunch and learn sessions done where you get to learn about an aspect of the business or hear a speaker talk about their area of expertise.

    Cons

It is sometimes difficult to get promotions or move around due to limited vacant positions.

    No opinion of CEO

I worked at Ecolab full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

A relatively flat organization under the old regime. A very focused company on the operational side of the business.

In the western half of the country, there was excellent mentoring of the managers who worked hard and bought in to the cluster's operational vision. The mentoring environment allowed employees to develop beyond their own expectations and prepare themselves for the next level.

    Cons

Previously had an ERP systems, however, kudos are in order for the innovative ways that they used the systems which they had.

They are currently moving to up data their ERP system.

    Advice to Management

    None.
