I have been working at Edelman Financial Services full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

If you are someone who enjoys change, Edelman can be a great place to work. The company has been through a lot of change over the past few years with new leadership in place. I believe these are all positive and necessary changes for Edelman to grow and last long term. New positions and opportunities have opened up that would have never surfaced if it weren't for the growth and change.

The culture at Edelman provides for a nice work/life balance. Long hours and working through lunch are discouraged by the majority of supervisors and managers. The tone is set that work is not the most important thing in your life. Generous benefits like sabbaticals and full pay maternity leave further echo this message.

    Cons

Could be a little more progressive with work flexibility options, especially for roles that are not client facing.

    Advice to Management

Focus more on hiring people who fit the culture.

    Pros

Compensation is the only positive, they make it hard to leave because you are paid well, if you can stand it.

    Cons

No autonomy, no personality, structured and regulated beyond all imagination, every procedure is controlled and dissected. Not normal and very stressful. CSA'S have way too much responsibility while the planners do very little.

    Advice to Management

The desire to grow will be met with the reality that you need to loosen the rigid vice grip, not sustainable and you will loose valuable employees in the process. The training should be focused on the job, not spread all over the place, most employees do not need to know the inner workings of Facilities, Marketing, the Mail Room or any other department just the extensive demands of their own jobs. TMI and silly.

I have been working at Edelman Financial Services full-time

    Pros

If you are a financial planner who hates prospecting, you'll love waiting for the phone to ring and having others set appointments for you.

    Cons

The firm is a financial planning firm and unless you are hired as a financial planner, it is extremely unlikely you will be able to work your way up the ranks and if you do it will take years. If you are not a financial planner you are among the second class citizens there to support them.

This company is all about Ric Edelman and has no room for employees to bring their personality or be resourceful. Do what you are told, don't question the process or the procedures and do not expect your individual contribution to have any value.

While the culture and values place the client's interests first, the fee schedule is excessive the financial planners are 9 to 5 employees and part of a manufacturing process with a firm that values robotic adherence to the firm's script.

There is only room for one entrepreneur in this organization. All financial planners have a picture on their wall with them shaking Ric's hand. Every financial planner has an award for excellent service on their bookcase.

Since shares of Edelman Financial have been recently purchased by Hellman and Friedman, Ric Edelman has become a newly minted billionaire who no longer runs the company - just his radio show. Rumor has it that his contract calls for him to stick around a few more years which begs the question- what's next?

While Ric and his wife Jean have given generously to charities of their choice including a recent donation of $25 million to Rowan University for a fossil park, the 401k plan for employees pales in comparison to how many of the clients they serve have benefited from retirement plans offered by their employers.

    Advice to Management

It's time to tap into the talents of others at the firm and let every employee flourish. It's not only possible but imperative for employees to be allowed to make their mark while maintaining the firm's consistent advice and service they refer to as One Face One Voice.

If charity begins at home, changes to improve the 401k plan should be made.

    Pros

Teamwork, care about employees and clients, good training, good people to work with.

    Cons

None, except I have to move to the west side of Michigan and there are no branch offices.

    Advice to Management

None. Management is great. Everyone is on the same page.

I have been working at Edelman Financial Services full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - Level of Difficulty. I was hired for a job I am capable of handling. I am encouraged to continue gaining additional knowledge and challenging myself.

    - Autonomy. However, my manager is extremely supportive and always available to provide guidance.

-Social Interactions. All of my colleagues are friendly, helpful, and seem like they enjoy their jobs. Others introduce themselves willingly. The company will often provide free swag and lunch or my colleagues will get together for lunch. There are many other company-sponsored or property mgmt related activities such as ice cream days, bbq lunches, book signing, and holiday celebrations.

    - Physical Environment. Great work space, access to updated technology (hardware & software), free garage parking, free gym on-site. Free coffee/tea/cocoa/water, vending machines, and plenty of kitchen space. Top floor has a beautiful view of Fairfax and surrounding areas.

    - Salary and Benefits. I am compensated fairly (including annual discretionary bonus). Benefits are comparable to other companies out there (i.e. medical/dental/vision coverage; 401k match, PTO + bday off). Other perks include on-going training and education/tuition reimbursement, access to free financial planning, gym discount, charity donation match, 4 wk paid sabbatical, 10 yr Rolex, free flu shots, and free Wolf Trap & baseball tickets.

    Cons

Room for improvement (since you asked):
    - more town hall meetings
    - better maternity leave
    - unlimited PTO or remote work options
    - laptop or cell phone reimbursements
    - gym reimbursement (rather than discount)
    - add additional retail discounts
    - start a company team (trivia, softball, soccer, bowling, bocce, etc.)

    Pros

Great investment philosophy and client centric focus. If you're a Financial Planner, great place to work. The celebrations and culture are appreciated by staff.

    Cons

Environment of paranoia due to sneaky upper management. Exec levels have no direction or ability to lead the organization. Drifting away from core culture the Ric and Jean built without appropriate change management.

    Advice to Management

Hire people who know how to manage non-financial planning staff.

    Pros

Fantastic company. Great ethics. Clients always come first. Environment is very pleasant. Great work life balance. Benefits and salary are great. CSA's and planners make the place hum.

    Cons

Management. VP nonexistent. Managers have no guidance and it's obvious. Not their fault. Fairfax supervisors seem lazy and have no idea how to lead or manage people.

    Advice to Management

    Clean house.
