Great people to work with, under-compensated

Oct 8, 2013 - Anonymous Employee in San Francisco, CA
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Smart people who push you to grow and will help you develop a job into a career. If you're good, they'll be really flexible when you request an account or office change.

    Cons

Severely underpaid when compared to other digital agencies or in-house opportunities. The SF economy has sky-rocketed in the last 3-4 years and rent has gone with it. Unfortunately, Edelman has not kept up with these increases. For this reason, we lose good people to other jobs quite often. In San Francisco, retaining good talent comes down to pay. That's just how it is right now.

    Stellar people

Mar 11, 2014 - Senior Vice President in San Francisco, CA

    Pros

Edelman is full of very smart people that drive you to do something different every day. That push allows you to learn a lot and take wonderful risks. I love working here! This is a wonderful place to build a career.

    Cons

The work-life balance isn't as good as it could be, but that is probably true everywhere.

Excited about Edelman after my first month of employment

Oct 3, 2013 - Recruitment Specialist in Chicago, IL

    Business Outlook

    Pros

The people are smart and creative. Everyone is hard working and dedicated, but with abundant personality. The depths of knowledge here is inspiring and it makes my talent acquisition role a pleasure.

    Cons

The office is very large and it is hard to get to know other employees that I do not work with often. This is just different for me coming from a smaller environment.

    Pros

Full-throttled agency for adrenalin seekers. People are smart as hell and determined to deliver their very best for an unrivaled client roster. Entrepreneurial culture that actively encourages experimentation and reasoned risk-taking. Doing a better job than any other firm in mastering the new realities.

    Cons

Hard for senior people to orient when they first arrive.

Terrific network but little room for advancement

    Dec 22, 2021 - Vice President
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

The network and range of specialties is remarkable The people are incredibly smart and generally very nice as well which is an unusual combination You do have a bit of autonomy but that comes with some drawbacks You will work on some of the biggest companies in the world and often on exciting projects I never had a work/life balance issue even though people say agencies work you too hard. I don't know if I'm just a hard worker by nature but I never felt overwhelmed which is often a complaint I see. The Edelman name still has impact so having it on your resume is a terrific thing even if you don't want to stay in agency life.

    Cons

There is little to no leadership development for VP+ roles. In other companies I've worked at there is an established management development process. I was never included in that at Edelman if there was one. Senior management rarely engages with the staff especially now that most are remote. Even mass email updates are rare. You hardly hear who is joining or leaving the company etc. While pay overall is decent the bonus structure and benefits are poor. We went many years without bonuses and they kept changing where the bonus pool was coming from, office, region, global etc.

    Pros

Edelman is an independent company with strong executive leadership that makes smart investments in its people and resources. They promote from within and work to provide employees with tools to be successful.

    Cons

Despite an effort to encourage collaboration across offices and geographies, it still can be a challenge for offices to "share" opportunities.

    VP Creative Director

Jun 24, 2013 - Vice President Creative Director in Chicago, IL
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Face pace environment. Smart and energetic people. Can do attitude. Lots of change to come in the next year as they vamp up their creative resources.

    Cons

Senior level people tend to manage up, not know how to manage projects or how to give direction to the junior level. Some seem short sighted and/or resistant to change.
