I worked at Edinburgh Napier University full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Salary, sick leave and holiday entitlements

    Cons

Clique colleague work culture which can be intimidating

    Advice to Management

if you have different ideas or ways to do things then you will be cased out and bullied into a corner by staff, management and HR. Definite favoritism amongst staff. Not a good company to work for, if you are disliked!

    Advice to Management

Provide progression opportunities to staff. Raise morale. Stop recruiting more senior management positions and recruit more lower-grade staff to deal with the increasing workloads. Have fair HR policies which apply to all staff. Improve communication and transparency. Hire managers who have social skills, can take responsibility, have faith in their staff, can delegate, have confidence and make decisions. Improve the...

    Disapproves of CEO

I worked at Edinburgh Napier University full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    Flexible working and international outreach.

    Cons

Staff work extremely hard to be able to keep up with random management decisions. Most of the staff are motivated only to avoid impacting the students' experience but that's it. Management makes impossible decisions and morale is very low. Money is spent in unnecessary items such as the buildings at the Gyle or the refurbishment of the Craiglockhart reception. Mediocre people are constantly being promoted. There's...

I worked at Edinburgh Napier University

    Pros

Great income; great environment when working directly with students; diverse opportunity; status of name; having been a student, learning the background was inspirational.

    Cons

Every seconded position I applied for (that was not brought to my direct attention by my line manager) I was unsuccessful in achieving. I believe a system of promotion would have been more indicative of a promoters in people, than having internal positions advertised yet still being ring-fenced for certain individuals - I was prey to this as well..

    Advice to Management

Listen to your subordinates and encourage diverse thinking!!! Especially in non-academic roles, ESPECIALLY because you only hire degree applicants!!! MOST OF WHICH STUDIED AT NAPIER!
