  3. "Too many managers coasting"

    StarStarStarStarStar
    Former Employee - Administrative/Support

I worked at Edinburgh Napier University full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Decent pay, good work-life balance (leave for family, holiday entitlement, flexible hours

    Cons

Very top heavy in terms of senior management. A lot of managers seem to think they're the head of a huge multi-national rather than a medium sized modern university. Very poor options for career development unless you're seen as one of the "right"people - ability or potential doesn't come into it. Lower grade staff who do "just enough" to coast along and not stick heads above the parapet are favoured over those... eager to get on and change things.

You're not running BAE Systems or Proctor & Gamble.

I worked at Edinburgh Napier University full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Only a good salary but nothing else.

    Cons

Poor top management, no transparency, heavy teaching with no adequate support, no respect from top management. Forced to work many hours outside the office if you want to have a research profile because there is a very minimal allocation of time for this activity. Bad review system which helps people who are not delivering to hide themselves. Ridiculous benefits.

I have been working at Edinburgh Napier University full-time

    Pros

Money and location. EDI is a nice city.

    Cons

No progression, no work life balance. Lots of rat race, lack of collegiaty.

    Advice to Management

Leave or get rid of HR hiring non academics to academic positions. The level of APs is a disgrace.

I worked at Edinburgh Napier University full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Buildings and offices are well laid out, equipment is of good quality and up to spec, some venues have nice gardens and grounds. The academic arm is doing the best it can possibly do and provides good quality service to students. Majority of ground workers are extremely pleasant and very good to work with.

    Cons

Poor hiring decisions and senior management level over a number of years. Internal promotion and hiring based on who they are and not ability to the job. Career path in IT not in line with the rest of the sector, cannot progress without giving up what you love doing. Female applicants for IT positions are being dropped despite great talent being displayed in practical test at interview in favor of people that... perform worse but know the interview panel personally. Poor to incompetent team leadership and senior management in certain areas of IT leading to unnecessary pressure on team members. Behavioral issues with Team leaders and senior management has nurtured a culture of bullying in certain areas of the organisation. This has lead to record numbers of leavers in some areas in the last 24 months.

    Advice to Management

Hire externally from senior management positions. Flatten management structure. Learn lessons from feedback as opposed to imposing staff engagement processes on staff as punishment for negative feedback.

I worked at Edinburgh Napier University full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Salary, sick leave and holiday entitlements

    Cons

Clique colleague work culture which can be intimidating

    Advice to Management

if you have different ideas or ways to do things then you will be cased out and bullied into a corner by staff, management and HR. Definite favoritism amongst staff. Not a good company to work for, if you are disliked!
