I worked at Edison Township Public Schools (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Teaching is relatively easy after the first year if you do your job, meet people where they are, look everyone in the eye, and empathize with the emotions of as many diverse people as possible. If you're an expert in your field of study and you know how to actually communicate with another human being while not fidgeting, it's even easier.

There WAS a nice short ladder for employment salary increases, but now it succumbed to the political elite on the north side who have bloated Wall St. finance salaries, though they've agreed to pay our data-driven, hot-air spewing, Ed.D. superintendent better than anyone else in the entire state... (not a Ph.D., an Ed.D.... basically a degree they offer administrators while never teaching them how to do real math... even though always spout a load of BS explaining their policies to be data driven... Sure, Mr. Doctor of Ed. Sure. Kinda like an MBA, just top it with more fluffy clouds language)

90% of the teachers in this district are top notch, even though some of the best ones legitimately suck as people. They do their work without being pushed, and they have many solutions which actually translate to real world change in many of their students' immediate futures.

    Cons

Well, besides being an autocrat of a superintendent, the union doesn't fight for anyone but the ancients. There is no creative problem solving. There are no useful programs for real ground-up improvements because everyone is too chicken to stand at a Board Meeting and tell it like it is. The Presidents of the union for the past 9 years have been useless wastes of space. The voters for union policy are all fearful for their pension-paid shore homes and so all elections are predictable wastes of time.

When you have an opinion, everyone hates you. They'll never call you on it but they'll talk about you behind your back until the cows come home. They'll make threatening glances and act like they're elementary school bullies but they'll never say a thing. Cause they never really know why they think the things they do and they usually can't defend their reasoning.

Sadly, many teachers, despite having to communicate all day, suck at communicating with adults in a cordial, polite way where they demonstrate an any sense of humor... and so the most difficult problems always become "people problems" in a school.

Education is looked down upon by everyone and every political a-hole who thinks they have a clue what is entailed. Defending it is useless.

Changing the disposition of a kid is nearly impossible. This is why people say, "even if I help affect one person... it's worth it." But revenue seekers will never understand that because they have no soul.

There is no future in teaching. Govt is squeezing our lives, our salaries, and our retirements. If you just started and you have talent, get out while it hasn't taken your future opportunities from you.

    Advice to Management

Don't pretend to be as smart as you are... you have very few ideas that lead to lasting, sustainable change. And stop being so fearful for your job... the superintendent is everyone's enemy. Start conducting yourself like people who actually have backbones...
