I have been working at Edmund Optics full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Like others have said before, Edmund offers a comforting family feel across the globe. You can easily feel at home in any global office and coworkers go above and beyond to make sure you feel like you have a home away from home. There is lots of opportunity for a person young in their career to do what is interesting to them. There is lots of room to take chances on an idea.

    Cons

No mentorship or room to grow. While you do have opportunity to take on new intellectually challenging projects, there is no career development. Pay is below average and is worse the longer you are with the company. Edmund does not see value in retaining employees and feels that they can find a better replacement.

    Advice to Management

This is a great place to start a career and for new graduates, I would highly recommend working here. The management needs to find ways to retain and grow their staff as they transition to the mid career level. What does this space look like? What options are there other than management? Also, a competitive pay analysis for mid career employees would help retain people while you are working to fix the career growth options. While the people are great at EO, the opportunity cost of working for a below average market rate is too high.

    Pros

They are always trying to have events that keep the workplace fun, make everyone feel included, and keep a family owned atmosphere.

    Cons

Because this is a catalog sales company, the same people often miss out on these functions, as well as have to work some weekends to keep up with customer demand.

    Advice to Management

Plan around helping your off-hours employees when it comes to coverage.

I worked at Edmund Optics full-time

    Pros

Seemingly friendly environment, cafeteria is nice, tuition reimbursement is nice IF they like you enough to give it to you. Employee engagement is the best thing about the company.

    Cons

Hypocrisy at it's finest along with nepotism, you have to consistently tell co workers to do THEIR job, hires you for a different job description than you were initially told you would have, HR doesn't care, doesn't train new employees accordingly, unprofessional, judgmental, they keep people (managers (Nepotism)) within the company that does not fulfill their job duties.

    Advice to Management

Stop Nepotism, train employees, fire HR department if they aren't going to handle a problem when presented to them.

I worked at Edmund Optics full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The opportunities and people you work with are great. If you are working out of the Corporate office, you get a lot of perks. The company tries overall to have a good work-life balance.

    Cons

The pay across the board tends to be on the lower side and there isn't really a good mentorship/development program. When they promote from within, it is typically either based on seniority or desperation and the candidate might not be fully qualified. Overall, if the pay scale fits, I would take the position.

    Advice to Management

Do a better job in career development. Typically there wasn't even a 6-12 month outlook for opportunities, let alone a multi-year plan.

    Pros

Absolutely the best place I've ever worked for! The people are amazing, collaborate well and the company cares about their employees A LOT!! Great team building events and they include the entire family for their annual, amazingly organized picnic.

    Cons

    Nothing to add here whatsoever.

    Advice to Management

Keep it going the way it's been!

I have been working at Edmund Optics full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

This is a company where proactivity is rewarded and re-activity merely sustains your current position. Those who seek out opportunity and jump in to areas that suit their strengths generally are rewarded and noticed.

    Cons

The family ownership and an unwillingness to be honest about weaknesses is holding back the company's growth potential. Management of strong personalities, coercing them to see the plan and agree takes up a lot of time that could be used for more productive activities.

    Advice to Management

My advice would be to truly take a look at what has and has not worked over the last 2-4 years and be honest and un-emotional about decisions that have been made. Change what is not working or what is going too slow and bolster the strength areas.

    Pros

    Great people to work with.

    Cons

If you do not fit the culture you will not make it long.

    Advice to Management

Even though the company has grown, they need to try and keep the small company atmosphere.

I have been working at Edmund Optics full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Most of the people I work with are very professional and take pride in doing a good job.

    Cons

Nepotism at it's worst. Edmund relatives hold positions they are completely unqualified for.

    Advice to Management

Try playing less dodge ball and other pointless games with your employees to build up morale. Instead promote employees based on merit, rather than who you know or are related too.

I have been working at Edmund Optics full-time

    Pros

The culture and the people are the best things about this company. Managers are welcoming of new ideas and input and they are always supporting new incentives and rewards for good work. There are really endless opportunities to move up in the company as well. Even if there isn't an open position, if you do good work and put solid effort into your job they will find a way to promote you. In addition to this, they have a great benefits program.

    Cons

Pay is very average/maybe even slightly below.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing.
