I have been working at Education Management Corporation full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    -good pay
    -great benefits
    -good hours
-if you like being on the phone all day and doing sales you'll be fine

    Cons

-not about the students, ALL about the numbers
-company has been struggling, though getting sold to not-for-profit by the end of summer
    -management is not the greatest
-fear based style of management- "hit the numbers or your fired"

    Advice to Management

-Drop the corporate lingo- if it's all about the numbers and making money then be honest about it instead of hiding behind "we're here for the students"
-Invest in your employees- showing appreciation can help motivate instead of running on a fear based system

    Pros

Good benefits. Future looks to be better...at this point. Schools have accreditation and staff try hard...good people locally at the campuses.

    Cons

Tough money situation so training is almost nil. Raises are almost non-existent. Need to find a way for management to stay focused on future possibilities but is tough. A lot of folks looking elsewhere for work.

    Advice to Management

Look for differentiating from the pack to get students.

    Pros

Not a bad place to start and learn. Sales will look good on resume if you sell it that way

    Cons

Focus not on students but just on numbers you will learn this quickly if you don't you're vlond

    Advice to Management

Got to be about students but that will never change so just keep doing it until the government cuts off the teet

    Pros

Good people, co-workers are considerate and work well together. There's lots of opportunity to grow.

    Cons

The struggles of the company make for a stressful environment. Few new employees are being brought in full-time.

    Advice to Management

You can not run the company on a skeleton crew forever. But in my experience, management has been involved with and understanding of their employees. The state of the company is making it hard for everyone.

I have been working at Education Management Corporation full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

My experience with EDMC was fine for the most part. I had little to no contact with corporate, primarily working independently from my home office. My direct manager was one of the best I've ever had (though she is no longer with the company). Ability to take classes for free was a huge plus.

    Cons

I left because I foresaw that they would start to experience financial challenges and I'm glad I left when I did because over the past few years there have been MASSIVE layoffs in the High School Department.

Regarding High School Programs, there is little opportunity for growth as the upper management tend to stick around for a long time, and many of them were laid off in 2015.

The presentations we were given to provide for the students were good but there was a lot of opportunity to train more on presentation skills, marketing, trends in the industry, getting student buy-in, etc. I taught myself quite a bit over 3 years.

The salary for California is quite low and I was constantly working jobs on the side to make up for it.
