I have been working at Education Management Corporation part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Diverse student bodies, interesting and highly educated co-workers, the work can be meaningful when it's directly related to educating or working with students.

    Cons

The company has been steadily limiting opportunities for students to complete programs, and successive staff reductions have decreased morale. Closing schools resulting in lack of job security harms employees and students and has tarnished the standing of the company in communities.

    Advice to Management

Local management varies and over all is exceptional since almost everyone in management has a master's degree level of education or above. The upper management in the corporation makes the major decisions which leaves local employees feeling that they are not valued stakeholders.

I worked at Education Management Corporation full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Working with the end user and seeing their joy when they have accomplished their goal. Most of the entry level people in Student Services, Admissions and Student Finance are great people with strong work ethics.

    Cons

No leadership training. They throw you into the deep end and say, "swim". Leadership is very focused on the wrong things. Instead of working to increase the customer populations they have a strong focus on becoming an elite academic institution. The system has achieve high credentials with many prestigious accrediting bodies - this should be enough to entice people to attend. There is no need for academic gimmicks. Since this is a for-profit institution of higher learning obtaining students should be a primary focus and it is not.

    Advice to Management

My only bit of advice to management is talk to the people that are actually doing the grunt work for ideas on how to improve. Stop thinking because of your higher credentials that you know what the clients want.

I worked at Education Management Corporation full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Decent benefits, pay was fine, coworkers were generally good. I liked working there, but it got kind of boring after a while.

    Cons

No clear direction for a number of years, the continual layoffs mean that lots of people with experience are gone, and the company tries to tell people things are going well when they're closing down most of their campuses.

    Advice to Management

Stop promoting ARs to management positions, since they contribute the most to the company culture of getting students to sign on at any cost.

    Pros

Free Schooling by a accredited Universities
    Schedules are convenient
Close to a freeway and home

    Cons

The pay isn't very much and the managers are all on different pages as to how they manage their employees. No real organization. Some managers believe they are more powerful than the others and like to micro manage other employees that aren't on their team.

    Advice to Management

When there are changes and updates to the software and logistics of the job, send out an email listing those changes before they come into play, allowing there to be more organization and less confusion amongst the employees.

I worked at Education Management Corporation full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

About 10 years ago, it was a great place to work - friendly people, sound management, good work/life balance and good pay.

    Cons

For the past 5 years, it has been a very negative place to work - constant layoffs or threats of layoffs, 401K match was discontinued, CEO is arrogant and non-caring, so many of the good talent has been laid off to save money, schools are closing. Very bad environment to work.
