I have been working at Education Management Corporation full-time

    Pros

The people at EDMC are what make working here enjoyable. The partnership at the managerial leadership is open and honest.

    Cons

The old school way of communication from the top down is outdated. Poor decisions based on thought rather than fact, impact the ability for the company to remain viable

    Advice to Management

Seek input from those individuals that are working with students. Listen to what IS working and how it can be improved.

I have been working at Education Management Corporation part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Diverse student bodies, interesting and highly educated co-workers, the work can be meaningful when it's directly related to educating or working with students.

    Cons

The company has been steadily limiting opportunities for students to complete programs, and successive staff reductions have decreased morale. Closing schools resulting in lack of job security harms employees and students and has tarnished the standing of the company in communities.

    Advice to Management

Local management varies and over all is exceptional since almost everyone in management has a master's degree level of education or above. The upper management in the corporation makes the major decisions which leaves local employees feeling that they are not valued stakeholders.

I worked at Education Management Corporation full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Working with the end user and seeing their joy when they have accomplished their goal. Most of the entry level people in Student Services, Admissions and Student Finance are great people with strong work ethics.

    Cons

No leadership training. They throw you into the deep end and say, "swim". Leadership is very focused on the wrong things. Instead of working to increase the customer populations they have a strong focus on becoming an elite academic institution. The system has achieve high credentials with many prestigious accrediting bodies - this should be enough to entice people to attend. There is no need for academic gimmicks. Since this is a for-profit institution of higher learning obtaining students should be a primary focus and it is not.

    Advice to Management

My only bit of advice to management is talk to the people that are actually doing the grunt work for ideas on how to improve. Stop thinking because of your higher credentials that you know what the clients want.

    Pros

    Decent Salaries; Good work environment

    Cons

Lack of Diversity throughout the company in high profile positions - Does not hire highly-qualified personel of color for positions in upper management or appoint them for the Board of Directors. Their schools include a high percentage of African-Americans, but the leadership fails to hire diverse upper managers. Instead, HR has a prven record of posting and hold "faux" interviews for a public image and "compliance", knowing all the long they plan to hire people they know. Qualified candidates can forget about fairness and transparency.

    Advice to Management

*Diversity in upper management and on the oard of Directors is incongruent to the organization's mission. Admit you have a "lack of diversity issue" and fix it!
*Work on faculty/staff retention and stop terminating employees based on numbers.
