I worked at Education Management Corporation full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

People were great in my area and it was convenient for travel being right by the T and bus lines.

    Cons

Too much turnover at management level and was not matching 401K or giving real raises. Employees leaving left and right. Layoffs.

    Advice to Management

    Invest in your people.

I have been working at Education Management Corporation full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

My experience with EDMC was fine for the most part. I had little to no contact with corporate, primarily working independently from my home office. My direct manager was one of the best I've ever had (though she is no longer with the company). Ability to take classes for free was a huge plus.

    Cons

I left because I foresaw that they would start to experience financial challenges and I'm glad I left when I did because over the past few years there have been MASSIVE layoffs in the High School Department.

Regarding High School Programs, there is little opportunity for growth as the upper management tend to stick around for a long time, and many of them were laid off in 2015.

The presentations we were given to provide for the students were good but there was a lot of opportunity to train more on presentation skills, marketing, trends in the industry, getting student buy-in, etc. I taught myself quite a bit over 3 years.

The salary for California is quite low and I was constantly working jobs on the side to make up for it.

    Pros

Strong work ethic among coworkers, exceptional representatives, ADA's, and faculty. Great for those who like to commute from a home office base if you land the high school representative position. Great for those who are self-sufficient workers. They train very extensively and provide a lot of tools for success.

    Cons

The salaries are not in keeping with higher priced pockets within the US and with inflation. It's impossible to support a family on this salary, and the hours prevent me from getting a supplemental job. This job bleeds me financially. They no longer match 401k.

    Advice to Management

Support your employees financially! They give you so much, and feel that you care nothing about them.

I worked at Education Management Corporation full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Employees have the ability to advance, learn, and grow. I learned more at EDMC than at any of my previous employers.

    Cons

Unstable environment. I made it through SEVERAL rounds/years of layoffs before it was my turn. Tricky financial and regulatory environment for the company right now.

    Advice to Management

If you have to lay more people off, make sure you pay attention to what each employee ACTUALLY contributes, not just their ability to talk.
