Pros
The flexibility in being able to set your own schedule is great. Scoring leaders are mostly very communicative and great to work with.
Cons
To be paid $15/hour for a job that requires an advanced degree and very specialized knowledge is a joke. On top of that, shifts are frequently shortened or cut with little advance notice. This is nothing more than side job - don't expect to make a living wage as a rater for ETS.

Raise Rater Pay, Cut Scoring Leader Pay.
Apr 19, 2019 - GRE Scorer in Los Angeles, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Good pay for Scoring Leaders.
Cons
Obscenely low pay for Raters. Raters make only $15 per hour. A few weeks ago, ETS GRE took applications for promotions to Scoring Leaders. The pay for a scoring Leader is $28.88 per hour. Raters make only 52% of what a Scoring Leader makes. 140 raters applied for 10 Scoring Leader openings. Well, no kidding. When confronted with this irrational pay differential, it is very disheartening. Such a working environment is demeaning and disgusting.

Dec 16, 2016 - Rater in San Antonio, TXRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Flexible hours, retirement, paid every two weeks, work from home, able to work fuLL time hours
Cons
Scoring Leaders need to be more uniform in their scoring requirements of raters; not always uniformed.

Pros
Of the other ETS exams, this is my favorite to rate. They have an easy to use system in place. The scoring leaders are very kind and supportive. It's a year-round position that I believe pays the most of the other exams. The pay isn't a lot, but it covers gas expenses.
Cons
Sometimes it feels like factory work--clocking in and out. The pay is low for the credentials they require. No benefits

Zero Incentives and Decreasing Compensation
Dec 4, 2018 - Testing ScorerRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Work from home and no penalty if you want to take time off.
Cons
They don't value their employees at all. You have to take multiple tests every day to prove you are scoring correctly. Inconsistent feedback from scoring leaders. Decreasing compensation and no benefits. I began this job at $13 an hour and was moved to better scoring opportunities and was earning $18.54 for scoring TOEFL exams and $21 an hour for scoring SAT exams. January 2017 they forced all TOEFL scorers to either accept a pay cut or we would have to quit. They cut our pay to $15, that's a huge loss. Hours are very inconsistent. Incredibly boring job.

Rater TOEIC /Scoring Leader Texas STAAR - Good work from home position
Nov 19, 2016 - Online TOEIC Rater/Texas STAAR Scoring Leader in Atlanta, GARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
-Great pay for work at home job-usually $13-$15 an hour and up! -Flexibility in scheduling- if you are not able to work on particular day then you simply don't make yourself available. Scheduling is done monthly several weeks in advance. For example- you submit your availability for December during the first week of November. You schedule for December is confirmed the 3rd week of November. -Shift cancellation policy pays for half of your shift if canceled with less than 24 hours notice. -If you don't like to deal with a lot of people when working, this is the job for you- you will only deal with your immediate supervisor (Scoring Leader) and maybe their supervisor, though it is rare (Chief Scoring Leader). You do not interact with other raters. -Most of the initial training is self paced based on the program- either 4 or 8 hours.
Cons
- Raters should be aware of the program they are hired for- not all programs are year round and give consistent work. This is stated in the job descriptions. Some jobs are just for a couple weeks, one or two times a year. For these programs employees should not expect full time work. ETS frequently hires months in advance. -Some Scoring Leaders (a Rater's immediate supervisor) apply the scoring rubrics inconsistently. Some provide tons of feedback during a shift for potentially 'wrong' scoring while others are so overwhelmed with their work load they don't provide feedback at all. -I have been turned down for some programs when I have gained the experience needed in the job description by working other programs (scoring non-English speakers, for example). This is not consistent! -Sometimes, my shift has been changed to earlier in the day with no notice (email or phone) -No benefits for work from home raters

All Depends on what you are looking for in a job
Jul 31, 2022 - TOEFL Rater in Pittsburgh, PARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Pick the days you want to work - doesn't mean all your choices will be given but allows flexibility if you have commitments on certain days. Ability to work from home. Variety in the topics to score - chance to learn something new. $15 an hour based on the area in which I live is a good salary. Most scoring leaders are helpful and kind in their instruction.
Cons
Your ability to score is based on your accuracy and speed. Scoring notes are given for all topics. However, the quality of the scoring notes varies - some are pretty bad with the bare minimum in what to look for. With 5 score ranges, it is tough to score when you are only given examples for one or 2 score levels. Must be careful in your interpretations of notes. Some of the essays especially in the Independent writing are lengthy - 400 plus words. It is difficult to keep up scoring speed at times.

Pros
Most of the scoring leaders are good people For me it's a second job and helpful in that respect
Cons
A couple of the scoring leaders should have been fired for rudeness and arrogance years ago. The management team are completely bamboozled by the recent transitions; even scoring leaders are commenting on the poor outcomes. These managers simply have screwed it up. Often assignments are done unfairly--there is no reward for years of service. There has not been a raise in several years, yet we are professionals with years of experience teaching and with graduate degrees. And for a company that works completely on line, checks are MAILED out which is absurd. Forget the e-rater: it is wrong more often than right, and it takes jobs from people.
