I have been working at Edwards Air Force Base full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Amazing place to grow, leadership is great. I have had a lot of fun at this location and look forward to my future outside the united states air force.

    Cons

The deployments are long and it is hard to leave family, however the time is good. TA could be a little better however, overall everything is great.

I have been working at Edwards Air Force Base full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

You get to be highly involve in all of the newest technology in a bigger scale (i.e. aircraft), and there's a lot of work available. Typically, you work only 40 hour week and great benefits. You may get to fly as an aircrew onboard various aircraft.

    Cons

As any government work, there some bureaucracy. Still old ways of doing things. Hard to move up to management level as there are tons of engineers on base. Only way a position opens up is either someone retires, moves out of area, or get promoted another position on the base. The base is isolated even though they advertise 90 mins from everywhere.

    Neutral Outlook

I have been working at Edwards Air Force Base full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - Interesting work
    - Opportunities for lateral growth / learning new systems
    - Multiple aircraft platforms / programs to work
    - Benefits are decent

    Cons

    - Low pay
    - Very few opportunities for advancement / few leadership positions
    - Master's degree required for promotion instead of selecting most qualified candidate
    - Engineers spend most of their time writing lengthy documents
    - Excessive training required that does not apply to the job
    - Dead weight, i.e., employees that show up and collect a paycheck
    - Location

    Advice to Management

Start promoting the right people and allowing new people into leadership positions instead of simply shifting the existing leadership around every few years.

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Edwards Air Force Base full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great schedule flexibility 8's or 4/10 shifts, low stress, set hours, federal holidays and benefits

    Cons

Lower pay than competitive commercial companies such as Northrop Gruman, Lockheed-Martin, GE or Pratt & Whitney. Not much room for career advancement. There is not very much money being put into my work center and the attrition rate is very rapid at the moment. No recent hires in years!

    Advice to Management

Value your employees: find bonus and promotion opportunities. Many are leaving to go make more money next door or down the road.

You have the opportunity to conduct test of the World's most advanced weapon systems. You will do things in this job you couldn't do any were else. It is by far the best organization for which I've worked

    Cons

Can't say anything bad about this organization.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the great work!

Former Employee - Aircraft Section Chief in Edwards AFB, CA

I worked at Edwards Air Force Base full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I was able to experience a wide span of aircraft while stationed there. There was always a chance to meet new people and pickup information and knowledge from the more experienced maintainers.

    Cons

I don't recommend Edwards AFB being a first assignment for new enlistees.
