I have been working at Ehrhardt Keefe Steiner full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great work environment, partners work one on one with you a few times a year, and casual dress code! They pay $3000 for CPA materials! $2000 bonus for passing the exam! Their holiday parties are out of control and will make any college grad feel right at home! If you dont like working with someone, all you have to do is tell your manager or the partner overseeing you and they can make it so you dont work with that individual!

    Cons

60-65 hour work weeks during Feb through April, and August through October

    Pros

Firm has strong culture and prides on principles which we strive to remain true to.

    Cons

Work is really dependent on the group you are part of and can be a big hit or miss. While they don't say, that Sales is part of your job - it really is. Evaluation process is a joke and lacks alignment and structure. It's primarily, what your boss think of you regardless of the performance or client satisfaction.

    Advice to Management

Continue to focus on the culture, clear job roles and responsibilities and measure people based on their roles.

    Pros

Very good learning experience. Work life balance was very good also. Very good working atmosphere

    Cons

Busy season can become stressful but that's the nature of the business

    Advice to Management

Try to keep the small company feel as the company continues to grow.

I have been working at Ehrhardt Keefe Steiner full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

food, weight gain, plenty of work to be had, repetitive nature, competitive environment, learn what not to do

    Cons

Political, immaturity, poor work life balance, trending toward Big 4 attitude, poor leadership, people get thrown under bus, sensitive people, processes out of date, not sticking to their word, poor partner selections, losing their cultural identity.

    Advice to Management

Support people through times of personal and professional stress. Understand that employees are more than just revenue-generating robots. Don't make rash, emotional decisions. Communicate when plans change, or commitments will not be met. Spend less time talking about a "great culture," and more time actually building one.

I worked at Ehrhardt Keefe Steiner full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Management tries to care about employees

    Cons

Nothing Ever changes - despite annual meetings discussing changes - stop pretending or make big changes
Sweat Shop - quantity is rewarded, even with little to no quality
Quality issues - technical accounting/tax issues the Company does not properly execute on multiple occasions
Some favorites of management are everyone else's least favorites

    Advice to Management

Listen to staff and seniors about managers, not just their brown nosing
Invest in quality management - especially in the tax area.

I have been working at Ehrhardt Keefe Steiner full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Wide variety of projects, some of the partners truly care about the employes, and the firm is growing rapidly.

    Cons

The Company's compensation is well below industrial norms. The reason for the discount is a better work-life balance. This was true a few years ago but the difference between the big 4 and EKS&H is rapidly changing. Ultimately, if you believe public accounting is just the first step in your career other places will open more doors.

    Advice to Management

Realize that the special culture that existed with 100 employees is impossible to maintain at 500. And culture is only as good as the coaching tree you're lucky enough to be placed in.

    Pros

EKS&H is a fast growing, great culture, people oriented firm. They are a great group of CPA's and have avenues for CPA's to expand their skills into consulting.

    Cons

They are CPA's so if you are a consultant and looking to join them remember that it is a CPA firm with all the trappings of a CPA firm no matter their attempt to be consultants. The vast majority of the partners are all CPAs and they think and act like CPAs.

I have been working at Ehrhardt Keefe Steiner full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Benefits are good (health insurance, dental, vision, 401k w/ matching contributions, incentives for participating in wellness program, etc.), and lots of great perks--free food and drinks, parties, fun outings (baseball games, picnics, BBQs, etc.), happy hours, annual bonuses, etc. The culture of the firm is excellent and the partners take it seriously. Pay is fair, and most of the people there are friendly, helpful, and enjoyable to work with. We have all the resources we need to do our jobs right (updated software, unlimited office supplies, countless trainings, etc.). HR is friendly and has an open door policy. Lots of opportunities to give feedback to the firm, although it's not always taken into consideration. Firm is also doing well financially and is constantly hiring new employees and searching for new talent (GROWTH!). Great place to work overall.

    Cons

I'm sure it depends which dept. you're in, but in mine, management plays favorites and is biased. A few people get away with everything, while the rest get away with nothing. Hours are brutal during busy seasons--expect to work upwards of 60-75 hours/wk, including weekends, no exceptions. Hard to get change implemented, many people there are resistant to change and moving forward. No opportunities for advancement in the practice support areas (admins, processing), which means no opportunities to make more money or move up in your career.

    Advice to Management

Do not play favorites -- people notice and that only creates more division. Compensate and recognize employees for taking on more responsibilities/challenges, or they won't have any motivation to do so in the future. Also, if you consistently receive feedback that the trainings someone does are inadequate and ineffective, changes need to be made! Proper training lays the foundation to being a good employee.
