I have been working at El Camino Hospital full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Pretty hospital, new facility in a nice setting

    Cons

unionized labor and no-one is running the overall health care

    Advice to Management

Please walk through all units of your hospital once a week and watch what the employees are doing (flirting and gossiping first then managing their own personal needs second then some of them will answer a call or do a little work - the "good ones" put customer services/patient care at priority number 3 or 4 . Is that acceptable to you and would YOU take your loved one to such a place?
Better yet, hire a mystery shopper so that you will not need to get your own hands tainted AND you can pay more and then you can maintain your denial and dismiss the reports because, obviously the consultants must be incompetent or confused.
Then you can also let the patients and family who can identify the doctors complain about their experiences and blame the doctors, because the doctor told me to go to that hospital ! If not for the doctor's recommendation, I would certainly NOT have had that bad experience ...

I worked at El Camino Hospital (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good Benefit, the health insurance covers all family without out of pocket cost. Copay is $25 for a regular visit and $35 for a specialty.

    Cons

Work culture is not good. Too much politics game drag the real work down. Management is not fair and superficial. Not understand real operation need. High turnover rate.

    Advice to Management

    Keep talents and respect them.

I worked at El Camino Hospital full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Amazing, hardworking therapeutic team. Most people openly complain about lack of help, pay and resources.

    Cons

Some members of management are antiquated in thought; one sided problem solving. Clinical staff not compensated appropriately. High turn over rate in clinical setting. Difficult environment to impart change. If you care about helping people it may be difficult; saving money is the hospitals main goal.

    Advice to Management

Listen to clinical nursing/ therapeutic (MD, PhD, Social Work, MFT, PhD, MD) staff. Clinical interns are placed in unethical and illegal violations on a regular basis not gaining adequate supervision, violating safety of staff and patients.

I have been working at El Camino Hospital part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Nursing staff by far make this place worth it. I'm at the LosGatos location, and much prefer the smaller community hospital feeling.

    Cons

The administration insists on making the two locations identical. Trying to make the smaller hospital function like the larger one, but without the ancillary staff.

    Advice to Management

Respect the nurses and what we do for your "enterprise". Truly function like a Magnet hospital.

    Cons

Management in my dept is horrible.

    Advice to Management

When you witness an employee bullying another, talk to all about and let everyone know that such behavior is not allowed in the work place.

    Pros

Rich benefit set with moderate pay scale. Stable organization.

    Cons

Departmental in-fighting, lack of strategic vision in the light of healthcare reform.

    Advice to Management

Define strategic plan and aggressively purse. Don't manage like your living in the 1970s.

    Pros

One of the best reasons to work at El Camino was that they realized the importance of nurses. It was a nurses hospital. this was good for the patients because nurses spend more time with patients than doctors and know their needs. Over time this was over done and anyone with a license was recruited. As the number of poor nurses grew so did our influence until management became anti-nurse and blame nurses for their own financial incompetence.

    Cons

This place has become so anti-nurse that the management no longer defends nurses, no matter how outrageous the situation the customer is always right, even when science and rational thought would dictate otherwise.

    Advice to Management

Quit doing the MAGNET dance and do what is right, not what LOOKS right on paper. In religion this is called repentance, a return to the true path after being lost.

    Pros

Great staff, clean and organized, high standards for patient privacy and infection control. The pay is better than most other hospitals in the area, or anywhere really

    Cons

Does not take care of staff, they don't care what hardships they put employees through during reorganization, plenty of ways to help displaced workers into other departments but they refuse to let them transfer to open positions. They do not offer growth opportunities to their employees, but will offer positions to external candidates of equal experience and education.

    Advice to Management

Why pay thousands of dollars into education for your employees and then refuse to allow them to advance their careers within the organization? You need to help out the employees who have proven themselves to be hard working and loyal to the company. You also need to allow current employees who have been laid off to fill positions they are capable of doing, and not fight the processes every step of the way.
