I worked at El Paso Electric full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Overall I had good pay and good benefits which I didn't have to pay a great deal for ...
For those who staying long enough, the pension is good and not likely to go away (various reasons). An overall good work environment. Very good safety record.

    Cons

Maintenance budget had been cut a few years running and the shortfalls were catching up to us. A company is always trying to do more with less, but in a company where reliability and availability are a must, you can't push budget cutting to the point it hurts production.

NO OT - Of the employers I've had in the power industry, there is a 50/50 chance each would offer overtime to salaried employees in cases were the work required went well beyond proper management of a professional workload. EPE was not one of them.

Some friction between the Union and Management. There was occasionally unnecessary agitation on both sides. Overall not too bad though.

The VP to whom we reported projected an air of negativity.
The mission and values statements felt rather empty.

    Advice to Management

If you want a job done and done right be willing to commit the resources to get it done.

The company would benefit from a more mutually beneficial relationship with the union (you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours). This requires cultivating that relationship all of the time, not just around contract negotiation time.

I worked at El Paso Electric (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Strong Community Involvement.
    Good long term possibilities.
Considered one of best employers in area.

    Cons

Some employees, hired long ago, want to cling to "how it was".

    Advice to Management

Provide a more clear and clean way for employees to register complaints against direct management...without the information being provided back to person the employee is filing against.

I have been working at El Paso Electric full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Stability is great. Benefits and salary are very good.

    Cons

Top heavy in upper management for such a small company. There are VP's with only two employees under them!

    Advice to Management

Take a look at middle to upper management staff. It is very top heavy!
Some of the managers are still using the old "union vs management" mentality.
The outlook of the company is positive as the CEO genuinely cares about the employees.

    Advice to Management

Try to avoid routines for employees and go more towards green energy.

"Good place to work and grow."

Current Employee - Project Manager in El Paso, TX

    No opinion of CEO

    Pros

Because it's a small company, one can gain a variety of experience while working in the same position. Senior management is accessible and top-down communication is very good most of the time. Employees are very dedicated and are willing to go above and beyond normal duties. Employees are routinely recognized for good performance.

    Cons

Some employees work a lot of overtime due to workload caused by understaffing. Hourly personnel are good with it because of the OT, and most salaried people don't mind either because mangement is flexible when it comes time for vacation and personal time off, however, too much for too long gets old.

    Advice to Management

If you invest in hiring more people it may free up your management to implement innovative ideas to improve productivity which may reduce costs. You will also be better prepared to address the aging workforce issue.
