I worked at Elgin Community College full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Opportunities for low-cost or free training classes, employee diversity, proximity to home

    Cons

There are many unhappy and angry people working here. Conflict between union and non-union employees makes for a hostile environment. Very high turnover rate, especially for a community college. New employee training is lacking in what you really need to know to do your job. Human Resources department is viewed with mistrust and distaste by many employees because of a few individuals who are able to get away with almost anything. Lots of nepotism across all departments. Processes are slow and cumbersome, making it difficult to get your job done. A few of the managerial staff are well known bullies, but do not face any disciplinary action. I would steer clear of this organization if you are looking for a community college job.

    Pros

Flexible hours, nice as a supplementary income for a grad student, students are overall good to work with, friendly co-workers

    Cons

The self reviews are completely unnecessary and are a waste of time, especially for a part time position.

    "College Success Course Instructor"

I have been working at Elgin Community College (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I taught the College Success Course part time at ECC for three years. I loved this experience due to the students and content.

    Cons

The big concern I had was when a counselor addressed my class about the counseling services.
Her first question was, “How many of you have been to the counseling center?” So a few raised their hands. Her question concerned me, as it violated confidentiality. As a counselor myself, I’m well aware of that professional ethic.
She then continued, “What did you go there for?”
I jumped in with both feet, and said, “I’ve already told my students that what happens at the counseling center is totally confidential, as allowed by law. I consider them free to avoid that question.” So she skipped it and went on.
I later emailed the Assistant Dean of Counseling, and gently told him about that scenario, and suggested a mild talk to her about it.
His response to me was a one sentence defense of her action, starting with the phrase, “She probably…”
I lost my position the next semester, supposedly because of negative student evaluations, which I knew didn’t take place, as I read them. I even had a student who picked me as an instructor because she asked around first to find out who the good teachers were.
So he defended unethical behavior, and didn’t appreciate feedback about it. What does that say?

    Advice to Management

Appreciate ethical behavior. Keep employees who exhibit it. They're the valuable ones. Don't defend unethical behavior. It looks wimpy and unprofessional.

    Pros

    great benefits - that's it

    Cons

Beware! Administration does not care about its employees. HR is horrible! Layoffs are occurring but yet high paid administrators who do nothing all day are kept around. Managers can treat you how ever they want and HR does nothing. The atmosphere is oppressive starting at the very top.

    Advice to Management

Retire and let new blood come in the door.

I worked at Elgin Community College (More than a year)

    Pros

Beautiful library. And the students were fun to help, they were usually very appreciative as well. I really liked my fellow librarians, but as a part time employee I didn't see them much.

    Cons

As a part time librarian I felt very disconnected from the rest of the staff. It was impossible to join committees and feel involved unless I came in on my hours/days off. The atmosphere (at the time) was clique-ish & and it seemed like the older librarians were resistant to change, particularly in realms of technology and added customer service.

    Advice to Management

Flex schedules for part timers so that they can participate in the library meetings and committees with out giving of their free time.

I have been working at Elgin Community College (More than 5 years)

    Pros

This is what dreams are made of. A workplace where you are a valued professional. A management team with consideration for all team members. An executive administrator that is nothing but transparent.

    Cons

Difficult to move from PT to FT, especially for adjunct instructors.

    Advice to Management

Give equal preference for FT positions, not just the support staff.
