I worked at Elizabeth City State University (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Sense of community and working with the student body is the best experience. Small campus feel and being able to work closely with others on projects. Great sense of accompaniment because we were able to do so much with less.

    Cons

Some of the surrounding area was not supportive of ECSU.... a lot of it due to the amount of turnover at the University over the past 5 years. State legislations has made it difficult for the University to thrive and stay competitive.

    Pros

Mid size University that have one of one connections with students.

    Cons

Promotions are not too common, some of leadership are not the correct fit for the Institution, when failures happen, no reviews are given to that leadership team, but keep repeating the same actions and getting the same results. Often times it is seen as incompetence is king, and competence is denigrated.

    Advice to Management

A lot of times you manage on familiarity breeds contempt. You should except employees with talent, skills, experience, and education, not on personal feelings or emotional feelings.

    Pros

Gained some great experience. Former alumni so it was nice to come back as an employee for a position I was very qualified for. Loved excelling at my work and making a difference. Felt like a place I wanted to retire from.

    Cons

The employees in some departments, not all, can be very rude and competitive in an aggressive manner. Was a wonderful place to work until lay-offs started taking over and everyone felt like their job was no longer secure. So a lot of people left. Also, since they are re-hiring for a ton of positions, the pay is MUCH lower.

    Advice to Management

If you want qualified people to do a great and ethical job, pay them what they are worth. College graduates nowadays do not want a position paying less than 50K. If salary does not increase, you get what you pay for.

I have been working at Elizabeth City State University full-time

    Pros

With Wonderful students, the university is positioned to meet a real need in the region. They have a long tradition of serving traditionally underserved groups.

    Cons

Budget cuts due to low enrollment, lay offs, and mismanagement are crippling faculty's ability to do their jobs. Lack of transparency and worsening reputation do not bode well for the future.

    Advice to Management

Find and use your best people because they are all trying to leave because they don't get recognition and support. Remove ineffective leadership.

I have been working at Elizabeth City State University full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

My immediate colleagues are wonderful educators who are dedicated to the students and their discipline. The ability of the student population is diverse, with it's own set of rewards and challenges.

    Cons

Administration is inept at best and corrupt at worst. Favoritism, Nepotism, and grudges are the rule of the day. The amount of turnover and instability is staggering.

    Advice to Management

Get some people in charge who are competent enough to fire the freeloaders, and find and retain quality faculty and administration before the whole place comes crashing down in a putrid heap of mediocrity.
