I worked at Emerson (Less than a year)

    Pros

Very easy going and friendly environment. The workplace is both new and completely secure.

    Cons

Management isn't very consistent team to team. Some are clock-watchers and others don't interact with their team enough.

    Advice to Management

Work should be about the content and not what time someone comes in and out. Flexibility lets workers push home life forward.

I have been working at Emerson full-time

    Pros

Vacation is a plus. Management is good at understanding life priorities outside of work.

    Cons

Career progression is limited. Benefits are slowly progressing in a negative fashion.

    Advice to Management

Help technical employees advance their careers.

I have been working at Emerson full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    -Great company! Great People!
    -Competitive Salary
    -Negotiable PTO
    -Flexible hours (to an extent)

    Cons

-Location (Marshalltown, IA) is the only real downside. If you are single with no kids, don't expect to find much exciting nightlife. The closest larger city is Ames, IA, 45 min away, which is a college town. The largest is the capital, Des Moines, 1 hour away.

    Advice to Management

    N/A

I have been working at Emerson full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Great working environment
    Good Benefits
Feel a sense of importance with my work
Training is ample for those who seek it
Lots of company investment in to the worker

    Cons

It can be troublesome to move up in the company. Some jobs seem pegged for others before you even interview. Many higher up positions are not posted internally and are selected based on "who you know" . Not a lot of transparency with the process, one day someone becomes your boss without any idea that there was a position open for you to apply to.

    Advice to Management

Make all jobs visible. Give employees a chance to see where they can tailor their career to move up. To entice a younger crowd to stay they will need to feel like they are not just a cog in the system and actually have an ability to move up without office politics.

    Pros

Really enjoyed interacting with the people working at Fisher Controls. It was a very collaborative environment. Top notch research facilities.

    Cons

Location. Location. Location. The job was in Marshalltown, Iowa. Far away from customers and pretty much the rest of the world.

    Advice to Management

Consider relocating to a larger city.

    Pros

Never dull, lots to do. Far and away the market leader in the valves sector. Refreshingly set working hours without undue pressure to work overtime.

    Cons

Hard to chart your own course. Expected to wait until you are appointed to new opportunities.

I have been working at Emerson full-time

    Pros

Good place to start career. Plenty of networking opportunities, this role allows for highly diverse opportunities to move throughout the organization.

    Cons

Marshalltown isn't the most metropolitan location, and commuting from Des Moines takes an even two hours per day. Pay increases are not competitive with similar roles elsewhere, even if base salary is acceptable.

    Advice to Management

Bring pay raises up to a level that keeps employees competitive with other roles with similar levels of experience.

    Pros

Great Organization, Great People, very professional environment but still has a family feel. Everyone is very helpful. Best in the industry.

    Cons

Lots of cubicle work makes interaction hard at times. However everyone was very open to helping at any time.

I worked at Emerson as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Laid back environment
Full-time employees are given opportunities to branch from section to section if they desire

    Cons

Saw quite a few layoffs of full-time employees during my six month tenure
    Not the greatest pay

    Advice to Management

There is always room for improvement in communication between levels of management. This helps to keep the vision and direction common at all levels.

I worked at Emerson as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Giant company with many opportunities around the world. In the Process Control world they are the best in class.

Ownership of products, at some times I was the only person to have worked on the code in years

    Cons

Unless valves and flow computers make you giddy the work may not be the most exciting.

Outside of engineering culture is stereotypically corporate

    Advice to Management

Set reasonable deadlines and really invest in your engineers.

Work isn't really an engineers dream job but its possible to make things less depressing.

The cyclical nature of fire everyone when the market is down to improve the bottom line doesn't inspire much employee loyalty.
