I have been working at Emerson full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

By and large you are responsible for selling a great product that comes with instant name recognition. Can do what you want in the sales territory.

    Cons

Lots of layers of management besides your supervisor. There are business development managers that don't do any developing. It is nearly impossible to make a bonus because of the buckets you have to fill rather than being based on growing a territory. Price is a hindrance to further sales, but management doesn't understand competitive market. Too many different business units only confuses the hell out of customers.

    Advice to Management

Understand the competitive landscape, don't have so many BDMs because all they want to do is travel as a job, and stop putting up walls for the sales team. I can sell to this industry but not that one. I can sell one type of instrument but not the other. It takes 3-4 Emerson salespeople to equal the products that a rep can offer. You have successfully buried great companies within a giant behemoth as brand names but not yet integrated a single business unit. Bravo!

I worked at Emerson full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Some of the best company events I have ever been to. Quick to ensure that you have the tools you need to complete your job.

    Cons

Pay is WAY below the average for Huntsville, AL. Too tall of a management hierarchy. No thought about employee's work/life balance.

    Advice to Management

Increase compensation and benefits. Flatten the management hierarchy. Work to encourage a better work/life balance.

    Positive Outlook
    Approves of CEO

    Pros

Great exposure to a full P&L management, International development opportunities, largely focused on growth through acquisitions, financially very stable, focused on generation of shareholder value, extremely ethic and holds every employee accountable for their actions and results.

    Cons

Complex matrix organization sometimes drags decisions for too long, micro management from top executives, several businesses ignores Emerson as a single company and works independently from a single direction.

    Advice to Management

Empowerment of businesses needs to be implemented. Several important decisions are delayed because of micromanagement and an extremely complex matrix organization that wants everybody to come to a consensus that sometimes is never reached.

    Pros

A global company with a lot of growth opportunities if you're willing to move. Some highly innovative products and talented people.

    Cons

Highly fragmented company. There's not really a sense of vision for the small subsidiaries on the periphery. Pay is below the regional average.
