    Pros

Small-scale company, nice people, new projects quite often, some schedule flexibility

    Cons

There is a strict "no hire" policy in place that forbids managers to hire permanent staff. They will almost only offer temporary positions, i.e. no employee benefits, mediocre salary, no time off, etc. Beware: if you ever are offered a permanent position, they will NOT recognize any prior service at all.

    Advice to Management

Let go of your no hire policy, you can't reward fidelity screwing people over denying them a real job.

I have been working at Empire Life full-time

    Pros

    - Very flexible company and supportive team
    - A lot of growth and opportunities to test new ideas
    - Excellent mandatory head office training for new hires
    - Overall excited about future in this company

    Cons

    - Need more hires in each department to match the evolving workload.
    - Disconnect from other offices. Need an annual gathering for all staff. We work on a daily basis with teams in Kingston, Toronto and Victoria Park office. Would be nice to strengthen our relationships in person.
    - A lot of activities in the Kingston head office to strengthen company culture, not enough in other offices.
    - Benefits can be improved.

    Pros

Good culture, work life balance, etc. Benefits are fairly competitive. Lots of long time employees, which says a lot. Overall a pretty good place to work.

    Cons

Very, very, very top heavy. I have 5 levels of management above me, which says a lot. This inverted pyramid is costing the company a lot of premium salary $. It is sometimes also a huge bottleneck in getting important work done, and decisions/approvals made.

My experience is mostly good, but the work experience can vary dramatically depending on what part of the company you are in and who the management are. Some areas are a lot healthier than others. If you are considering taking a job at Empire, find out who you will be reporting to and try to find out as much as you can about what it is like working with them before you accept.

    Advice to Management

It feels like an upside down pyramid here sometimes in terms of the org structure. That's very counterproductive and wasteful. There are too many VP's and Directors in my opinion. In some cases those positions don't have many people reporting to them, whereas others are totally swamped. We could probably save a million dollars a year by cutting a few senior positions and within a few months nobody would even notice.
