I have been working at ADP full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

Comp plan is very good if you are a top performer. Company trips and incentives are a nice perk. Stock plans are a nice incentive. Top company in the industry. Very strong training program. Career path is there for you in management or to stay in sales. The company has made strides in recent years to upgrade their marketing and technology for the salesforce.

Cons

Base salary for experienced salespeople can be a barrier because 1st year earning potential can be low. Incentive trips are taxed. Medical benefit plan is not very rich but it is not expensive (get what you pay for). Sales growth can outperform the service infrastructure resulting in a lower client retention rate than I think would be possible if they did a better job of staffing service people to meet demand

Advice to Management

Continue to invest in technology and spend extra on service people to get retain quality service people and prevent them from burning out because they are stretched too thin.

    I have been working at ADP full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Great company/location to be complacent in. Perfect for those who are happy without responsibility, and love to hide behind others, and be compartmentalized. Great work-life balance.

    Cons

    Even the most ambitious and well-funded effort to re-structure development groups and move to agile methodologies and tools has failed to change the silo culture of this firm. Organizational structures make no sense (product owners report up differently from development team members - one hand doesn't know what the other does), effective communication between groups / applications still does not happen. Product owners have no accountability for the product. In fact, nobody seems to have any accountability.
    You have to be very good at maneuvering organizational obstacle courses and avoiding land mines if you want to be successful, because the quality of the software has no meaning in the decision process.
    No career opportunities in Portland - if you want to be a part of the happening software crowd, you will be forced to move to Chicago. Unfortunately they get nothing done there because every day a newer and shinier technology comes along, which must be tried in favor of abandoning everything that was done yesterday.

    Advice to Management

    Stop supporting the chase of new and shiny technologies and focus on business needs and opportunities. The religious obsession with co-location is irrational. Value existing IP; don't fire people with >20 year company experience because they work from home. Stop wasting money on re-inventing wheels for political reasons. Foster communication, foster collaboration. Successful employees are happy employees.

    I have been working at ADP full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Opportunity to work from home -- many people are remote and you do not feel left out because of it. Lots of good clients. Seems to be a stable company, especially now that it is owned by ADP. Many of the people are super nice and are very talented at what they do. You will learn a lot and will have great training available to you. It is good to work for a company that is so respected. People take pride in their work. It is a great place to work if you want a well paying job where you can work from home. Your job satisfaction will depend on what client you support. Some of the accounts are just less enjoyable than others. Plus, some managers are better than others. You might like your job so much and then see it change quickly. They really offer great service to clients and are very good at what they do.

    Cons

    Work/life balance is hard to maintain. Just when you get a handle on something, you are asked to take on more. Since being bought by ADP, the company lost its warmth and many of the perks. Before, the vacation policy, paid benefits, perks like a big Christmas party, prize giveaways, and summer hours were awesome. Now the vacation policy is very standard and it seems that every penny is closely managed. The "fun" is gone from the company and it feels like just a job now. They used to send weekly memos and praise people and tell you what is happening in the company. That has stopped. While there is a ton of training you can take, it can be hard to fit it in because you are so busy. Also, the sales people set up the contracts with so many expectations that it is almost impossible to every deliver what they promised. All of these cons do not over power the good things about working for The RightThing. It is just sad that so much changed when everything was just a happy, happy, joy, joy place before it was sold. It is still a good place to work, but these things just detract from that.

    Advice to Management

    Put less emphasis on the NPS. Stop having people spend so much time on internal things and let them focus on the client. Give the teams enough resources to do their jobs so they can live up to what was sold. Stop over promising in the contracts and be honest.
