I have been working at AICPA full-time

Pros

The members are nice, and it seems that all of the employees at the AICPA are nice whether you know them or not. There are occasional activities for the company to try to help raise moral. There are good health and dental benefits that you can buy at a good rate due to the company.

Cons

At least in my department (SCO), the member specialists seem to be the workhorses of the institute. You are expected to do a lot and know everything to help the members with absolutely anything, but you receive very little in return. The almost unachievable quality and productivity standards that you're held to does not cause for an ideal work environment, and most of the quality that you're graded on (QA) does not even affect the service you provided to a member. It can be extremely petty, and makes all what the specialist has done seem useless. More so like robots. Everything is about hitting numbers. Also, the technology they provide you with are impossible to work with. Seems like websites and databases are down everyday that you need to use. In turn, the websites that the members need are therefore down too. And the department logs every break time, lunch time, the time you spend on each call or email with a member, meeting, etc. down to the second in real time. There's no freedom when it comes to this because this is how they track your exact productivity everyday day.
    The supervisors or managers admit they wouldn't be able to consistently do the specialists jobs, but they still expect you to bend over backwards and get it done. Sadly, all levels within the department seem to have high stress. Turnover is quite high in this department, and morale is often low. Anything mentioned by management to ease morale during the time members pay their dues (called "dues season") is thrown out the window because it's too busy. Specialists also don't accrue 1 full vacation day (8 hours) a month, but just 6 1/3 hours. And you can only be sick and use your sick days, you can't use your vacation days as sick time. Seemingly petty again.
    You also will stop having time to review the daily updated documentation you're supposed to keep up with, or review your own quality or productivity during dues season because it's just too busy...and again it's all about the numbers and getting the most member renewals. They also don't promote those within that have the most knowledge or experience in a role, but continue to ask you to apply. There's favoritism within the department, and it's pretty clear among everyone. This also causes low morale. Specialists look to move outside of the SCO, because there's less favortism and less stressful jobs. So many qualified individuals don't know what else to do, and management doesn't have any valid excuses just to keep up great work.

Advice to Management

My advice to management would be to make the job of member specialists less like a factory job and just producing numbers. If you want better productivity but keep quality, hire enough specialists to learn the job and stay. Add more value to the quality of service specialists are providing. And quality shouldn't be too harsh with the use of the word "umm" on a call or missing a comma in a email to a member. Specialist always talk about this. And also it would be good to stop showing favoritism, because specialists also see this and talk about it. It lowers morale when others haven't proved themselves for a full year but you hire them over someone who has more experience and knowledge already doing these core functions. Feels good to see your co-workers hard work pay off.

    I worked at AICPA as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

    Good job to get experience. Flexible work schedule. I was in school and my hours varied each day to accommodate my school schedule. Decent work/life balance.

    Cons

    Management has a tendency to make promises that are not kept. A lot of office politics. Bring outside resources rather than promoting from within. Communication from management is lacking.

    Advice to Management

    Promote from within.

    Pros

    benefits are good, fellow employees are good. Teamwork is very good.

    Cons

    Don't back fill positions to save a buck. lots of politics, favoritism. managers don't have much of a backbone when dealing with upper management.

    Advice to Management

    Quit trying to squeeze a dollar out of a dime. Recognize when work paradigms are not working and be willing to spend the money on additional positions instead of expecting employees to just "suck it up" 'cause we are a non-revenue team. Sr Managers - take the feedback YOU asked for and stand up to the almighty budget gods.
