I have been working at AIG full-time (More than a year)

Pros

Compensation is good, 401K match is good, lots of vacation time, relatively intelligent staff, Brand is gaining respect, Charismatic, driven and smart CEO

Cons

Everyone works hard - but leadership mandates 20% of people get a bad rating so the culture is super competitive. Rather than teamwork, people just stab you in the back all the time. They take credit for your good work and call your manager on any minor mistakes. It is a corrupt, cancerous place. Managers don't know how to manage. Add on continued restructuring and lay-offs - and a fantastic CEO who is irreplaceable and about to retire - and it is not a healthy climate nor does it have a good future. The Property Casualty dept which is huge component of AIG's business is not doing well. Steer clear.

Advice to Management

Focus on driving revenue and business growth. Strive to build a teamwork-based culture and a meritocracy based on a more effective 360 degree review process and set expectations for managers. Set benchmarks for what success looks like in each role. Right now it is just a 'free for all' with no standards or guidelines for success so people are evaluated based on hazy wisps of nothingness.

I worked at AIG as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Management cares about staff. Exciting projects. Teams genuinely show teamwork here and there is no perceived back stabbing going on.

    Cons

Very fast pace and high pressure with long hours. Perfection is the goal and if you are not that type of person, then. ...

    Advice to Management

A bit more Work life balance would be good.

I worked at AIG full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Reasonable working hours during the off-months
Work from home an option if you arent looking for a promotion
    Located in Manhatten

    Cons

Terribly under-skilled workforce that still operates like its 1988
You will be expected to work all hours and days during the close to "support the team" who will mostly work at the pace of a 64 and a half year old govt employee
Many Analyst level employees are paid hourly with overtime so there is no grassroots effort to improve insanely inefficient processes
No understanding of the actual business implications of the numbers, just a "get the numbers close enough and in the gl in time" mentality
Management is judged only on timely entries without errors (there is no error checking anywhere) so its just a pump out entrys environment
Incredibly outdated GL and other systems (think MS Dos type command prompts with no system generate-able reports)
Managers could care less about advancing employees or building careers
The rating system is an absolute joke, you will be compared with any and all people and rated by a "roundtable" 90% of whom couldnt pick you out in a lineup of 3
Too many old insurance Men who keep the company locked in 1988
I could keep going on for a while more... stay away

    Advice to Management

Senior Management (C-Level) has the right vision but the levels below them are generally completely incompetent and the entire house needs to be cleaned
