I have been working at ALM full-time

    Pros

ALM is transforming itself from a traditional publisher to a digital media company. There are a lot of new opportunities opening up, especially on the digital, and marketing and sales side of the house. If you like a fast paced but friendly, collegial work environment, this is a great place.

    Cons

NYC offices split between Downtown and Brooklyn (Metrotech). Most new jobs are in those locations. There tend to be some occasional long hours - tied to deadlines or big events and tradeshows.

    Advice to Management

    Keep it up!

I worked at ALM full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

There are still some brands remaining which have a strong reputation, for the moment.

    Cons

ALM used to be the finest legal media company in the world - universally respected. The editor of The American Lawyer has been made redundant, as has the editor of Corporate Counsel, their most senior reporters and nearly 20% of the workforce. Basically, anyone who had been there a few years and was earning a semi-decent salary was cut.

The problems are systemic and the company has pretty much ceased to function as a viable media entity. The CEO is a strange little man without charm or grace - it's a mystery he has been allowed to carry out such savage staff cuts in order to mask the inadequacies of his own strategy. They want to be a data provider and are happy to run the biggest brand in legal journalism into the ground. Surely that's a poor business decision?

The NY office is a morgue. Anyone with talent has long since left or been dumped. It's no place to go if you have the remotest desire to progress your career.

As a certain orange-skinned politician with a similar penchant for destroying companies would say: VERY SAD!!

    Advice to Management

A singularly pointless exercise, giving the CEO any advice. I presume he is hanging on for a pay out. I do wonder if being so widely disliked troubles him at all - I doubt it.
