I worked at AMD as an intern (Less than a year)

Pros

- Coworkers are generally great people. Most everyone I met was friendly and relaxed
- So long as you're getting your work done, many teams are laid back on restrictions (e.g. - no set schedule to show up/leave)
- "Green initiative." I was never really an Earth-conscious person, but the whole "Go Green" initiative was pretty interesting like how the buildings are designed to reutilize rain water, the push for carpooling, and promotion of working from home
- Upper management does a good job of being "visible" to the company. Speeches and "town hall" meetings by CEO and other execs are a great way to interact with workers

Cons

- Layoffs. Many people were (and still are) being laid off.
- Lack of structure/standards for some teams (e.g. - no source control, no preferred languages for company)
- Marketing department doesn't seem very good at their job. Still have to explain AMD to people

Advice to Management

Upper execs give some great speeches detailing future plans and current products, there should be a way to get that out to the public (looking at you, marketing). Although still hurting from the Intel lawsuits, stop laying off a lot of your workers. It's happened over 3 times in the past few years and it's very demoralizing to teams to see 2 or 3 people that sat near you now gone.

    Disapproves of CEO

    Pros

Great culture and talent pool. Positive attitudes abound. Interesting environment considering the product line and marketing opportunities.

    Cons

Slow adjustments in the marketplace have lead to a decline. Environment suffers from a lack of understanding what is next and an uneasiness about the future.

I worked at AMD full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

If you are driven , want to learn new things and stretch your responsibility ....you will have plenty of opportunities to do so(mostly because half the company doesn't care or doesn't want or doesn't know how to do the work)

    Cons

    1) Middle Management is mostly either incompetent or not willing to rock a sinking boat.
    2) WAY too top heavy with too many new directors and VPs from outside the company who have no clue about the AMD culture( which was a big plus for AMD for a long time - not anymore)
    3) The quality of hires over the last few years ( especially at the management level) has deteriorated to the point that some of the hires are just warm bodies.

    Advice to Management

Stop hiring more incompetent directors and VPs and focus on hiring good engineers who can actually build good products .
