Pros

The benefits were exceptionally good (medical, dental, vision, mental health, reimbursment accts, and legal); very ethnically diverse workforce, variety of job functions available to more ambitious, responsible workers.

Cons

No transfer within the company for workers from the "old AT&T"; very little opportunity for promotion, constant threat of lay-offs undermined morale, and the union (@ least our local) often picked the wrong battles and frequently conspired with managment @ the expense of the workers

Advice to Management

Find a way around the union to reward/promote employee performance over seniority; invest time and thought into promoting center morale

    Pros

Big company with opportunities to make internal career changes
    Strong commitment to diversity
    Company matches charitable contributions
Some flexibility in health insurance options
Lots of reorgs which can be pro or con
    Decent but not great salaries
    Some flexibility for telecommuting

    Cons

Absurdly cheap in some areas like charging for bottle water "water club" and travel per diem of $42/day regardless of location
Lots of legacy "lifers" who have been there 25+ years who struggle to keep up with new product lines.
Limited career growth opportunities with 2 mergers in past 5 years resulting in top heavy org charts.
Management health care package is worse and more expensive than union package. Excuse was there is only so much budget for health costs and union can negotiate.
HR policy of requiring a "release" from current boss can be career killer if boss doesn't want you to leave.
Company culture promotes generalists over subject matter experts resulting in management that is in theory interchangeable but clueless of what their staff does.
Matrix management system means any new initiative is like an Italian government with continuous negotiations, meetings and threats. Anyone in core team can say "no" even if not directly impacted.
Management expected to complete 200 hours of strike job replacement courses in addition to regular duties with no extra pay

    Advice to Management

Need to hire non- telco executives who value results not process.
IT is hopelessly dysfunctional and should be accountable to business units. IT is too process driven to be effective in competitive world. Business units are charged full rates by IT and Engineering regardless of completion rate or accuracy with no recourse.
One AT&T is a fantasy for interdepartmental initiatives.

    Pros

Can be a fun place to work most of the time. I recommend working at at&t to anybody who can handle a more than moderate amount of pressure and has a thirst for technology. Compensation is more than what most americans make by far. You get awesome health care and there is plenty of room to move up in the company.

    Cons

There are some mean people out there. Sometimes the company doesn't feel like it has your back as much as they have the customers.

    Advice to Management

Bend over backwards for your reps and always have their backs no matter what. Your money is made off of what THEY do not what YOU do.
