I worked at AT&T full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

Job security as funny as it may sound. If you are in the right job at the right location, you're set.

Cons

Constant never ending barrage of crap from upper managers who have no experience and insist on micro-managing to the most extreme level. The local managers have all just given up or given in, it is a downright shame what the current corporate raiders have done.

Advice to Management

Get out of the every day operations and let the local managers do more of what they were hired for in the first place. When a local "field" manager has to call you and tell you he is writing down a quality check on you for yesterday and today in case anyone asks, there is a big problem.

I have been working at AT&T full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - technically interesting work (depending on the dept)
    - year end bonus
    - good salary (if in Lab type dept)

    Cons

    - benefits lowered each year
    - cost cutting highest priority
    - job satisfaction not really mgmt priority
    - process heavy
    - upper mgmt says they are interested in work life balance but policies don't make that obvious
    - moving around to different roles/depts is difficult even though its very big company
    - somewhat of a cutthroat mentality among peers and line management not willing/able to fix this and change the culture in the dept

I have been working at AT&T full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The benefits are incredible and start as soon as your hired. The starting pay is quite adequate and increases are as they say.

    Cons

The work schedule could use a bit of tweaking.....I.E., install and repair scheduling, not so many per day unless they have the personnel to cover it.

    Advice to Management

It would do management a lot of good to do the job of Prem. Tech. for a week or so to see how unrealistic the job expectations are....length of time alotted per job is the biggest concern as you never know from one job to the next what you'll be up against. Personally, i love working with people when i do installs and repairs and find it very rewarding when i do the job beyond the customers expectations, even if it means taking another hour to do it as it should done and answer all questions the customer may have.
