Pros

Co-workers are great. HR is not.

Cons

HR Managers are very untrustworthy. Don't believe recruiters. Ask to speak with future co-workers regarding management, especially if you plan to work with. Trust is very important in supporting user engagement. No wonder engagement is low. Don't be fooled. Talk to current employees.

Advice to Management

Review exit interviews. There are some serious issues with HR Management, however they are the ones who do the exit interviews. Unethical behavior is supported and encouraged. Hard for upper management to see that there is an issue if the reviewers are the problem. Hire independent investigators to look at high talent turnover in the last 2 years. It is NOT because of the economy. How much talent must leave before this is addressed? They are ruining what could be a great organization but nobody is aware. Internal Audit or 3rd party investigation is recommended.

    Approves of CEO

I have been working at Actuant full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Most of the senior leadership team of Actuant from the CEO down are approachable and easy to speak with.
The pay is OK, but does vary by business unit.
Bonus system is very good when it pays out.
    Lots of good employees.

    Cons

They look outside to fill leadership positions instead of filling them more from within
The performance review system is terrible
The bonus system drives short term thinking. This is a major problem for a company wanting to be more innovative.
New managers from larger, outside companies are having a negative impact on the culture. Corporate politics are taking over.

    Advice to Management

If you want to be an innovative company, quit hiring outside managers from large corporations and let the employees from the smaller, innovative companies you purchase lead the business.

I worked at Actuant full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Decent pay, reasonable bonus program, and good benefits

    Cons

Very narrow scope thinking - everything was focused on cost reduction and not quality or customer service. Also, the over-riding sense was that even though they had bought a very successful company, everything that had been done in the past was wrong - the corporate entity was all-knowing and their way was the only way.

    Advice to Management

When you buy a successful company, spend just as much time studying what made them successful as you do telling them how everything should be done. And also, become aware of the fact that low-cost country sourcing is not always the best answer to every question.
