"Good place to start an engineering career and learn the job. No defined career path. Get out after 2-3 yrs!"

    Pros

A great place to start up your career as an engineer because of the immediate hands-on approach and the sheer intensity of operations. Three years working experience at Addax as an engineer is equivalent to four to five years in other companies. Good diversity. That's about it.

    Cons

The problems are numerous. A lack of adequate planning by the management leads to fire brigade approach to work programs, a complete lack of appreciation of the contributions of the technical people has led to a high turnover, lack of a merit-based appraisal/promotion system that has led to promotion based on favour, stagnation at one position for years with no prospect of rising, no defined job descriptions, inability to attract and retain talent, non-commitment to knowledge acquisition, sharing and cascading, double standards and intense politics.

    Advice to Management

The company in Nigeria is on the decline and this is reflected in production figures and the high turnover. Replace the dead-wood and dinosaurs in management with young and vibrant managers that can formulate continuous growth strategies. Adjust conditions of service of staff to be commensurate with the industry. The entire HR department requires a complete overhaul and re-orientation. Well defined job descriptions are required for staff. The appraisal process is a complete sham and shows Addax is not a meritocracy but a 'psychopantocracy' (a new process is required or a new set of people to manage it). Finally, stand-offs with the union make for bad press. My advice is that the management should be more pro-active and actually work towards giving employees their entitlements without conflict.
