Friendly people, volatile work environment

Teammates were the best I've had in a long time. Pair programming focus. Practicing TDD. Excellent PR Reviews. Positive feedback & generally psychologically safe environment. Promotes from within. Annual salary review process with possible raises. Free flights on all Alaska planes (as Standby only).
Cons
Management has said on more than one occasion how little their contracting workforce is to them, and openly discussed laying off their contractors in a meeting open to all staff. Generally found executive leadership to be two faced; kind in person, but non-people focused in practice. Design department is underwater with little to no guidance - we built most of our own mocks and had to go in and fix a lot of things later when design finally got back to us. Brand new design system that was never built with or consulted by potential design system users; incredibly difficult to install, implement, and utilize. Little to no ability to update, change, or enhance design system and no staff to the project to assist with impending deadlines. My team specifically has been without a direct manager for over 4 months, and the interim manager they put in place has terrible leadership qualities. Can't communicate without berating, publicly shaming people's code & decisions (with no pretext), and is making large team-altering decisions without consulting anyone other than executive leadership. Turned a beautiful, safe team environment into a volatile, egg-shell stepping space.

Great company to work with

Base managers were good. Flight benefits were ok. Paid training Stock benefits! Fun, fun job. Training was fun too.
Cons
Being on reserve is never fun. As a single person, one can't survive on the low pay. Especially when you need to pay for a crash pad.

Great fun and benefits; lousy pay starting out.
Apr 25, 2023 - Flight Attendant in Seattle, WARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Company benefits are great. Flight benefits are amazing - if you can get on a flight. Once you've been with the company awhile you have so much more flexibility with scheduling flights and destinations. But, you have to climb through the ranks to get there. Meeting and flying with amazing crew, and meeting new people. If you like people, this is an amazingly fun job! Also, the company's focus on safety is stellar. Everyone puts safety first.
Cons
Starting pay is horrible. The way we're paid (by trip, not by hour) you can sometimes be making minimum wage, when you factor in not being paid until the aircraft door is closed. I've met a number of newer FAs who've shared how they were living out of the cars when they first started flying. You can occasionally be assigned to work with someone who really shouldn't be in this job, i.e., mean and unfriendly people. They aren't the norm, but they are out there. The good part about this is that the chances are slim that you'd have to fly with them again. And, when you get enough seniority you can add them to your "Do Not Fly" list. :) Occasionally, you'll get a passenger who challenges you. Not often though, which speaks to the caliber of the average Alaska customer. It's difficult to have a relationship with your supervisor or any other leader in your reporting chain since there are so many flight attendants and we are always in the air or on layovers.
