I worked at Algenol Biofuels full-time

    Pros

For a company of its size and still in full R&D with investor only backing the pay and benefits are really good. Lots of great people who are very smart and educated. Employees are willing to put in the time and effort to be successful.

    Cons

The pool of good people is decreasing as many have been leaving. It's understandable that the company needs to go where the money is, but many times it is knee jerk reactions and if some planning was put into it they would be much further ahead. I feel that the company continues to over sell and under produce. Leadership doesn't appear to have a good plan. They continue to focus on parts of the business and... engineering design that should probably be farmed out to experts and not their core competencies or market focus. Too many leaders not doing what they are preaching. I feel that they really like to focus on the very visible aspects and not the foundations that need to be established for then to actually get into the markets that they are trying to break into.

    Advice to Management

Get a plan and have realistic timelines. Get focused and follow through. Get/retain people that have conception to market/commercialization experience. Watch for employee morale and burnout. Be careful of what is said and how things are said and be mindful of who is around when those things are said.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Algenol Biofuels full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    - Smart, driven colleagues who are passionate about their work - Most employees re-located to the area to work at Algenol, so there is a strong friendship community at work - Not a lot of bureaucracy/red tape - easy to get answers quickly - Generous salary/benefits - Necessary resources (personnel, equipment) are always made available. - Corporate efforts are made to foster positive culture - The potential of... this company is extraordinary

    Cons

    - Because the company is a private R&D company, there is no revenue and the operating budget is dependent upon fundraising. While the company has always been successful in this regard, it can be unsettling to not know from year to year how this is going to work out. - Some Managers are strong and some are weak; the employee experience with Management is inconsistent depending on which dept you work in.

    Advice to Management

Communicate all the way down the chain. Sometimes communication seems to stop at the Director level.
