I worked at Alnylam full-time

Pros

Compensation was good and liked my colleagues a great deal. It was a fast paced environment which could be attractive to some. The tuition reimbursement was a definite plus.

Cons

The fast paced environment leads to costly mistakes and stress that are not needed and completely preventable. Publicly traded biotech is unstable and Alnylam is not immune. Supposedly management cut deep during the first layoffs (2010) so they would not have to repeat anytime soon. Then in early 2012, another 33% of the workforce was cut. The vesting schedule on stock options was not helpful. Work/Life balance was becoming questionable when I left.

Advice to Management

Slow down

I have been working at Alnylam full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Fantastic company working to revolutionize therapeutics for human health that constantly works to improve the environment for each of its employees. The task was not small when Alnylam opened its doors as creating an entirely new class of therapeutics is an epic battle with many phases: publication featuring the hot new technology, enter big pharma, exit big pharma as they can’t spend the time or effort required for a new science (although many continued working on the technology internally); consistent scientific work perseveres; clinical data give proof of concept for the technology; those that doubt circle back. It is common story, one the antibody field knows well.

The scientific focus is on any disease that fits the criteria of benefiting a patient population in medical need including orphan diseases. They encourage employees to give back to the community by reaching out to advocates for various patient populations, encouraging employee participation in fundraisers for various diseases, and participate in programs getting kids involved in science. They are committed to doing their best to advocate for employees to move forward with their career path. They encourage innovation while putting the focus necessary on programs needed for the company to successfully prove the technology and execute what is required for a company to develop products that reach those that are suffering. Those that have no other medical options.

The people are great and the scientific publication rate is high. The most important factor: the comment from collaborators an those at conferences is that “ you can always reproduce the data in Alnylam publications.” As a scientist, what is more important than producing sound scientific results. The ability of the company to successfully collaborate with 99.9% of investigators and companies worldwide speaks to their ability to produce sound science and play well with others.
They keep benefits and salaries competitive as well as looking outside the box for ideas to encourage employee happiness. The understand it is important to have a work life balance.

    Cons

Perfection or to be completely free from fault is inhuman. In regards to employees moving on the career path, well, there are always obstacles that some encounter due to the nature of the program, others avoid due to their assignment, or due to the supervisor's ability or capability. It is on the company radar and they do their best to help every employee achieve their personal goals and improve on their weaknesses. They do their best to train those new to supervisory type roles and incorporate seminars especially for leadership team to maximize their leadership skills. They believe in innovation and constant improvement which puts them on the path to moving the company up on the list ranking the best companies to work for. There are still areas for improvement which is true for any company, even Google. The HR door is always open if needed.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the innovation...

I have been working at Alnylam as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

There are lots of friendly people around that are willing to help you.

    Cons

The company is a bit small so you do not get a lot of on-site benefits such as gyms. But still a great place.
