Pros

You might get some good technical experience. Compensation is average.

Cons

Poor management: very old school, lots of politics, micromanagement, anti-motivational methods, favoritism.
Working from home is discouraged (crunch time or not). No work-life balance.
Many unstated rules, inconsistent policies.

Advice to Management

Be fair and clear on policies.
Be consistent. Treat everyone equally and with respect.

I worked at Altera full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Good compensation and learning opportunities, lots of talent potential, often competitive technology, but more promising future if 14 nm is successful as a product and with customer designs.

    Cons

Reduction of strategic execution and lack of transparency and real collaboration wastes lots of time and bandwidth of resources, which is never adequate enough to achieve what is really needed to help the company more forward.

    Advice to Management

Need more true leadership at all levels to get the best out of the workforce (i.e. the men and women who will really determine if you succeed or not). Start with imparting an exciting long term vision (beyond just slides), then lead the troops across all departments with good S.M.A.R.T. goals, especially the "Realistic" part, that ensures success. Also, study peers in the industry who are succeeding in areas that you are not.
