"Great while it was a start-up - Amazon sunk their control and paws in once Kindle was successful."

    Doesn't Recommend

I worked at Amazon Lab126 full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

A lot of internal on line resources available if your boss let's you use them. Good discount on Amazon products. Working on a leading edge successful product was fulfilling.

    Cons

Long hours - especially if one is on someone's list (in a position of power's bad side). Pressure to do things the way they do it in Seattle - what works in Seattle must work for all affiliates every where. A lot of software managers were or are H1-B visa holders(born outside USA). So management style has a very "yes" expectation from sub-ordinates and political. The culture is the opposite of American style - apple pie, baseball, etc...

    Advice to Management

Spend resources on making a Linux office desktop/laptop image -- MS windows for laptops is very old school. Hire more IT workers in Cupertino not managers. Google has goobuntu - put a couple of engineers on making a standard Linux image for laptops to replace MS Windows on laptops for internal use @ Lab126/Amazon.
