I have been working at Amazon as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

The team I supported (Instant Video and Digital Music) was very collaborative and very involved with the business. Willing to share ideas and end result of getting the best hires for Amazon

    Cons

Very competitive across the recruiting org, some in the recruiting functions willing to work as a team, others not so much.

I worked at Amazon full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Obscene signing bonuses, great stock offers, lots of opportunity to move up and over, fast-paced

    Cons

No support for work-life balance, grueling 70-80 hour weeks are pretty standard, benefits definitely sub-par relative to Microsoft/Google/Nordstrom, high attrition means disruptive turnover, parking is a nightmare. Oh and you can forget about Christmas - you'll be at the office like everybody else.

I was actually told by my GM that "Amazon deliberately under-resources teams in order to squeeze innovation and automation from employees." No concern for employee health and well being whatsoever. I saw many people quit because of stress-related health conditions.

    Advice to Management

Lighten up and let employees have lives outside the office. Retaining talent means investing in more than just employee output - it means treating employees like human beings, not machines. No one can work 80 hours a week ad infinitum.
