I worked at Amazon as an intern (Less than a year)

Pros

Great place to learn a lot and work with smart people. The company is ambitious, and the pay is pretty good.

Cons

Hard to maintain a work/life balance. But it is possible. The work culture makes burnout common, so watch out.

I have been working at Amazon full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Pay arrives on time. Parking lot gets cleared of snow pretty well in winter time. They give you windbreaker things when you have to stand outside due to fire alarm in the winter.

    Cons

Most "rules" are unwritten, are presented differently by each manager, and change a lot. Negative atmosphere. Inadequate training. Dangerous practices: "team lift" policy, for example, is a joke ... paper protection for company against lawsuits.

    Advice to Management

Stop acknowledging how bad you are at communication and do something about it! Don't be scared to write a few things down so people have some idea what's what.

Oh, and how did it come to pass that managers' favorite sport is catching people violating break-times? ... Actually taking pictures from concealed positions in one instance ...

And the company propaganda posted at eye-level above the urinals? Come on! Why aren't those propaganda posters above the toilets in the office restrooms?

I have been working at Amazon full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Executive focus and engagement in programs is very motivating (and scary for some). No place to hide for under-performers, and super smart and motivated people. Clear accountabilities.

    Cons

Work-life can take a hit. Very limited training, and public image of company being a sweat shop is de-motivating. Feels like other companies also do amazing things, but somehow people work less there (not sure how).
