Pros
The Amazon cloud SW development tooling is excellent, supports multiple programming languages, and it's used by almost all teams developing cloud services at Amazon. That means really low friction to creating the core code (the stuff that adds value), minimal time with ops, and a high emphasis on operational excellence.
Cons
Hard to build bond with my team, but that is probably mostly due to remote development instead of in-person.
Trainers are valued here. There are many resources including scheduled off podium time to focus on learning new skills. Amazon being very metrics driven gets you reliable feedback for each and every class that you deliver. While there are many trainers worldwide the teams themselves are small so there are plenty of opportunities for coaching from your manager. Unlike other companies I have worked with, Time spent traveling counts toward your utilization metrics.
Cons
The initial learning ramp can be steep for a new technical trainer. No matter where you work, technical trainers need to be uniquely self motivated and responsible. You need to be comfortable with (and competent at) being seen by the customer as the face of AWS.
Really smart people, a lot of opportunity for growth, always encouraged to be innovative, think big, and create something new. Competitive salary and benefits with other major tech companies. 100% self motivating work environment. No dress code and 4 legged friends are welcome.
Cons
You have to be self motivated. NO ONE will hold your hand and tell you that you're doing a great job. If you need constant affirmations from management, this company isn't for you.
