Pros

The common comment was: It used to be a great company; today it has good ergonomics and offices.

Cons

It is confirmed. Having several conversations with employees at other divisions of the company I received the same comments. Secretaries rule over managers to the point that managers are fired and secretaries stay, the rest is up to your imagination, so on this perspective you can figure out what is the rest of the company. I speak for the Houston operation only, no clue of other offices.

Advice to Management

Pay attention to what are you doing with Sr. Management and the empowered ladies. Some of the long term managers have to much concentrated power that will eventually ruing the company.

    Pros

    Excellent work/life balance. Positive & Negative feedback is HIGHLY encouraged. Employees track hours spent on projects as they are billable to the client, so anything over 40/week goes toward vacation. 9/80 program (optional) allows employees, over a two week period, to work 9 of 10 days, still totaling 80 hours total, taking every other friday off! However, this is a luxury, so if the project(s) need you, you're in for overtime. Very competitive salary. Training is available for specialized engineering software. Friendly work environment. Very forward thinking company. Observant of employees needs. Company is proud of their Safety record.

    Cons

    Many engineering disciplines utilize a specialized piece of software which has a heavy learning curve. Quality of work from other offices can occationally fall short of Minneapolis's standards.

    Advice to Management

    Keep promoting the employee feedback from team leaders & management. Thank you for offering the 9/80 program. Keep up the good work.

    Pros

    The company is profitable and continuously has work.
    There are many opportunities for professional growth and career advancement (see related note in cons).
    The company is more than happy to cross-train their staff to do more than one job.
    The company works with staff during slow periods to keep them employed.
    Benefits, including sick, personal leave, holidays, vacation, insurance and investment opportunies are astounding! Even better, they start accruing/available for use on day one of employment - no waiting periods.
    AMEC is a drug free workplace and will conduct drug tests on employees.

    Cons

    The company is extremely top-heavy. There are many VPs, senior managers, senior scientists, etc in a given area. This makes it difficult to win projects because of higher billing rates.
    AMEC frequently acquires other companies (usually a good sign), but then reorganizes geographic regions and breaks up good, profitable teams.
    Some offices are extremely territorial, making it difficult to work in your geographic area.
    Billing rates are skewed for engineers, and do not take into account that scientists (e.g., GIS techs, biologists, archaeologists, and field technicians) typically get paid less.
    Some staff are over-paid for their level of education, experience, and number of client contacts.

    Advice to Management

    Reduce then number of senior scientists and increase the number of field techs. Increasing the number of mid and lower level staff allows us to bid and win our projects fairly and helps others get more experience. Senior Management also needs to understand that, even though they are engineers, not everyone else is. Therefore, bringing in lots of engineering work does not mean that all programs are growing.
    Provide more opportunities for mid level staff to travel internationally. The more experience that your mid level staff have, the more marketable they become.
