I have been working at Amec Foster Wheeler full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

AMEC bought a lot of smaller high quality companies, with a lot of people that are consumate professionals and experts in their fields. (If they would only listen to them rather than ignore them until they leave.) There are some interesting and technically challenging projects to work on as well. Not as bad as URS or Tetratech from most reports.

    Cons

Its a publicly traded company, with a lot of red tape to make employees unhappy while making corporate and shareholders happy. The Health and Safety slogan is "Beyond zero." Sounds good to marketing people, but not to anyone actually doing technical work. For two basic reasons- it is laughable to begin with and in practice the company low bids on projects, often making health and safety very low on the list of priorities. The company low bids because it can't compete with other companies on technical expertise or in the quality of work. AMEC ate up a bunch of high quality small firms to fix this, but good people are constantly leaving as their non-competes expire.

    Advice to Management

Learn from the companies known for industry leading expertise and high quality work. Or be honest and concede that the goal is to be the best URS or Tetratech you can be.
