Approves of CEO

Pros

MACTEC's technical depth is better than most if its competitors. Wide range of service lines and national presence means a lot of project diversity. The new CEO (Massey) is trying to change the toxic culture (see Cons below) but it will take years to adopt ideas.

Cons

Managers consistently fail to identify talent and promote from within. Project level and senior staff correctly observe that management appears more interested in stifling professional development than fostering it. Mentoring programs and internal project management training are window-dressing without any substance. Lots of dead weight. MACTEC is a great place for unambitious engineers and scientists who aspire to mediocrity, boredom, and underachievement.

Advice to Management

Managers should ask their employees for feedback on their own performance. They'd be surprised at how observant and insightful their staffs are and might even learn a thing or two about how to get the most out of their employees.
