Pros

AmeriCorps gives you the opportunity to simultaneously serve your country and undergo incredible personal and professional growth. Be sure to check out the Emergency Response Team (ERT) at AmeriCorps St. Louis.

Cons

On ERT the work was hard and demanded very long hours. We would sometimes be on the road and away from home for 8 weeks at a time. Sleeping on the ground, on cots, in tents, in church basements--that was the norm.

    Pros

Service to the community, especially those in need. training and developing youth from diverse backgrounds. Preparing youth ages 16 to 24 to face the "real" world. Having played a significant role in the lives of others. Seeing and being part of the success stories.

    Cons

Organization enforced policies on a reactive basis. This goes against all the training I have received. The organization deviated from its mission statement, which labeled it as a training and development entity. Many times the organization would take unskilled members who were suppose to be trained in the construction trade and actually put them on a job. Ultimately the job was subpar and raised the ire of the recipient of the organizations services.

    Advice to Management

The organization has been revamped. Site Supervisors should not use unskilled labor to complete jobs that require skilled craftmen. The organization needs to stick to its mission statement, and Site Supervisors should treat their charges like people. Our role is mentoring and
training, not slave driving or setting people up to fail
