I worked at AmeriCorps full-time (Less than a year)

Pros

certain programs, like NCCC provide you with a modest stipend, as well as room and board, and a food allowance. its a wonderful place to meet friends, potiential employers, give back to the community and simply live outside the box.
Its a very safe program to work with.

Cons

The room and board can vary greatly depending on your project, and the food allowance MUST be shared among you and your team.
The rules imposed all have a purpose, but can be stifling after a while. At times it felt like being at summer camp.

Advice to Management

It would be easier on the volunteers if a little more respect was given to them as adults.

I have been working at AmeriCorps as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Able to do things without any previous experience
    Rising to the challenge
    Pushing your limits
More than professional growth & development

    Cons

AmeriCorps administration does not seem to know how to meet members where they are and help them to be successful.
If you don't know anyone who has done the branch of AC service you are considering, DO YOUR HOMEWORK!
That living allowance ain't no joke. Gird your loins!

    Advice to Management

Do more to bridge the gap from start to successful completion. This needs to be someone's actual job, not just a bullet point in various job descriptions. A satisfying member experience needs to be someone's priority - with accountability.

    Pros

great way to meet interesting people. amazing opportunities to see the other side of America and work to improve it. people usually go straight for peacecorps to make their mark in their world but AmeriCorps gives you an opportunity to help those who are so easily overlooked in your own backyard. so much room for experience and program directors are so focessed on your needs and wants they will happily work with you to make sure you get everything you expected of your service year.

    Cons

very small stipend. difficult communication with larger organization for stipend/education award issues. look into your assignment as much as you can before committing, try and speak with the former AmeriCorps member who served there to find out how much of an effect you will have and if it is worth it.
