I worked at AmeriCorps full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Meet hard-working humanitarians, contribute to ending poverty in the US, may receive excellent training, see what goes on in the non-profit industry from behind the scenes, education award

    Cons

receive extremely low pay (usually less than minimum wage), may be required to work more than 40 hour weeks, training / support / responsibilities vary widely depending on host organization. Personally, I felt like a slave during my Americorps tenure, working over 60 hours some weeks and receiving $800 each month. There was little praise / support from my management.

    Advice to Management

audit S&N organizations thoroughly. In my experience, there was a lot of corruption. I was required to take on responsibilities that were not mentioned in the job description / interview (including driving for personal errands of the organization's staff), and our situation changed erratically due to lack of management's preparation. Our organization (ACE in Austin, Texas) did not have the funding necessary to run smoothly. As a volunteer, I sometimes felt like a overworked slave.
